I picked up on some resemblances between the classic Spyro and Skylanders series. They probably don't mean anything, but it's fun to spot them nonetheless. Feel free to share your own, although the general section seems to be pretty quiet nowadays :3

Skylanders: Superchargers - An obvious one, using the term from the classic Insomniac games and A Hero's Tail.

Skylanders: Imaginators Sensei - This years gimmicklanders share a name with one of the dragon elders from Shadow Legacy.

Skylanders: Imaginators Sky-Chi - A special move, just like the Chi moves from Shadow Legacy.

Skylanders: Imaginators Ember - As some of you have already noticed, our new fire sentinel has the same name as Ember from A Hero's Tail.

Sensei can refer to anything.

But the Dragon Temple level mentioning in one of the Imaginators screenshots definitely brings up a flag.

Most of the ones I noticed were in the original game.

-Flynn is a nod to the original balloonists from Spyro.
-Persephone is a nod to the fairies from the original franchise.
-Auric's design is heavily inspired by Moneybags from Spyro games after the first one.
-T-Bone is a nod to Mr. Bones: the Dancing Skeleton from Spyro's 2 and 3.
-Being able to hurt NPCs was a feature in the Spyro games after the first one.

...I'm pretty sure there are more, but I can't think of them.

-Sparx
-Cynder
-Dragon's Peak
-Flynn is the Balloonist
-Kaos similar to Ripto kinda
-Moneybags is in the games now known as Auric
-CRASH BANDICOOT! A character known for crossing over with Spyro many times before...
-New Ember's name might be a reference to Ember from AHT/Shadow Legacy
-Gems are collectable
-Eruptor's design is vaguely similar to the Magma Cone Lava Monsters
-Gill Grunt looks like some Fish monster enemies from AHT
-The Snake Skylander from Swap Force looks very much like Hunter

I'll think of more later...

Are they not? I saw in gameplay of one of the games there were big Diamond/Gem things...

They are around, but the game's currency is mainly coins and gold things. I really wish they'd gone for gems, though.

- Jet Vac is a bird with a British accent and flies with a jet pack just like Sgt. Byrd.

- I can't remember which Skylander it is, but one their upgrades is called Blowhard which is the name of a boss in Spyro 1.

- Hugo is similar to the Professor as he is the brains of the series.

- Gusto resembles a gnorc.

- Some of the NPCs such as the molekins look the same as each other just like NPCs in the Spyro games.

Ka-Boom's backstory mentions Munitions Forge as his former home, even calling it an "ancient volcanic island".
