Well in the Brothers Grimm's tale, the ball was actually a festival that lasted for a couple of days.

Every night Cinderella left the prince behind before he got the chance to know her, and on the final night he smeared pitch (which is tar, I think) on the steps she would run down. So her foot got stuck and she had to leave the shoe behind.
