I have a theory that his name is composed from Latin malum - evil, and Greek foreo- I carry.
"the carrier of evil" or maybe "the source of evil".
What do you think?

I've noticed a lot of stories do this. They put the prefix "mal" in front of a name if the character is evil.

Ex. Draco Malfoy

The word that came to mind when I thought of this was malignant, but malignant probably comes from the word malum anyway.

I'm pretty sure Spyro was meant to be Pyro (Fire) with an S in front of it, but that might be a possibility too.

Thats just what the name Spyro is, they probably did intend it to be Pyro with an S but they also knew it was a real name so they didn't just make it up.

Volteer: Volt.
Terrador: Terra, wich also means earth.

About Malefor, I think his name is from the word "Malevent", wich means "Kill and destruction."
