"Any nail that sticks out will be hammered down" is what the Japanese say to prevent students or employees from standing with any unique personality or ideas to instead remain as part of a droning unit. That is just awful with the amount of peer pressure from parents, teachers, employers and society general. No wonder there's so much suicide is sky-high there. This philosophy is destroying them from the inside.
How about this?
"Hammer the nails too much and you will break the entire board."

Maybe it's one of those less family friendly sayings like "no good deed goes unpunished"

Maybe we should look to the Americans for how to live a libertarian individualistic lifestyle;
Get knocked up at 16, DUIed at 18, join a homophobic hate-club, run around with a "God Hates Gays" sign and convince people that they should chop off their children's hands if they display gay tendencies (It's ok because you're just exercising your freedom of speech). Look at your own society before judging others you ethnocentric punk. |

This was harsh and unnecessary. Those things that you listed are not a part of our "culture" per-say, they are individual experiences. The comment that they made was on Japanese culture and the general idea of how they see things. American has it's problems just like every other country but it's a great place to live, better than most. |

This is not a good response to Steve's post and I think you know that. While the proverb does sound iffy and I'm not sure quite how often it's said there (maybe you can clarify), the examples you list there are very off base as an example of American culture, especially the anti-LGBT statements. Gay marriage has been ruled legal throughout the nation now and even before that most stories regarding anti-gay folks or laws have been based in the rural Southern US, which in on itself doesn't represent the entire country (specifically the more liberal north and western states and cities, including mine). And that law will very likely remain that way (the three major presidential candidates still standing all support the ruling, or at least express indifference; even Trump). Japan does have a high suicide rate, an issue that affects the entire country at large. And your comparison to that is people running around with anti-gay signs as a part of a small radical religious group that the vast vast majority of the US condemns as a hate group. It doesn't add up. |

I dunno how often it's said over there but it reminds me of how Japan leans more on the collectivist side of things
But I also hear that Japanese youth is starting to really change things so maybe that proverb won't be used as much in the future? Quote: QueenChrysalis

That is incredibly generalized and you know it. Teen pregnancy is an issue, but it isn't a rampant thing that happens to a majority. At 18, it is illegal to drink and while it can still happen where one will get a DUI, but the average teen is likely to try and be a bit more careful to not get caught as a DUI is the least of their concerns if they do get caught. As for homophobic hate-groups with "God Hates Gays" signs, that is well known to be a specific group from a radical church group as well as certain parts of rural South and does not represent the majority in any way. Also, chopping people's hands off for being gay is not a thing in US and anyone who would try to do such would find themseves in serious legal trouble and jail time for doing so. I don't know the meaning of that proverb and I'm not going to pretend to. It is an observation he was making and if it means something else, feel free to politely correct us. I also find it incredibly ironic that you of all people would say the bolded considering how much you go around spouting stereotyped hateful remarks against the American culture.

The proverb means that anyone who speaks out against a higher power shall be put back into place by said higher power. Basically, I think it's another way of saying "Workers should be seen, not heard." But I'm not too sure myself, so don't quote me on that.

How cute! You really thought this would go over well with people didn't you? Newsflash: this is a slim, slim portion of the population you're criticizing! Good job, over generalizing our culture! |

I feel like the East has always been a huge systematic meritocracy. It can't really be compared to our Western aristocracies, because both systems suck.

Wow! What a very poor way to respond. Of course American culture is ****ty. I'm surrounded by homophobic Catholics in rural Ireland and with the local priest acting like a self-righteous prick about the "purity" or marriage while they all say living together without being married is a sin. What you said has nothing to do with what I originally brung up... but it was inspired by just how Japan is just as homophobic, which is why I made this topic in the first place. http://www.japantimes.co.jp/ne...h/#.Vy1D2-T7clA If it isn't a sign of Japan still being ruled over by imperialist pigs, then I don't know what is. P.S. You're a douchebag.

Lest we forget Japan's strict and demanding work ethic to the point where most relationships are non existent and instead left to dating a bunch on Digimon ladies? I love Japan's creativity and dedication to Animation and art (And I'm not into anime that much), but one thing I can't stand is their extremely high demand when it comes to work and other such things. They should adopt a Western approach to how they handle stuff like that. That's why the suicide rate in Japan is so high.

I get what Chrysalis is saying with the post. That assuming the proverb is widely spoken and believed in could be false, and if you don't know about the actual matter at hand you shouldn't be one to judge it.
But then she follows it up with doing the exact same thing. Except generalizing the US as being one big WBC is seriously incorrect. I'm not sure if that was the point in how assuming the proverb is widely spoken is also seriously incorrect (if Chrysalis could elaborate I'd appreciate it), but at the same time Japan does factually have that high suicide rate. |
