Everyone talks about how being in love hurts like hell. Have you ever voluntarily fallen out of love with someone? How did you achieve it? How long did it take?

For me it didn't hurt until after. I was with this girl on and off for 3 years, and eventually I just didn't have feelings for her anymore. We had a great relationship but she didn't know what she wanted. When it ended for the last time I was numb. It wasn't too painful, but it didn't feel real. Looking back hurt a lot, though. I wondered if it was something I did or didn't do. But I stopped blaming myself when I took an objective look at it and realized it probably was for the best anyway. Now I'm with someone else and we're having our 4th anniversary later this year, and it doesn't hurt to look back anymore. Not anymore than any other memory (nostalgia hurts).

It was involuntary for me. You can't change your feelings for someone, it just happens.

I was already was getting to a really serious... almost boring (for lack of a better term). It wasn't that hard to drop her, because she felt the same way, and I let her down easy

I think it's more of a matter of withdrawing your attention and company from someone and then falling out of love comes gradually.

Me personally, I can't control my emotions very well, so voluntarily falling out of love is impossible.

You can't force yourself to not feel an emotion that strong.
Like Metallo said, it's more about taking the steps you need to take to get those feelings to go away overtime.
And if you genuinely loved them it should take a long time.
No phone calls, no texts, no checking their social media. The best way to not love someone anymore is to completely get every aspect of them out of your life.
