US 2016 presidential election and general US political discussion thread [CLOSED]

First off, this is a very controversial topic so please keep it civil and respect everyone's opinion, even if you wholeheartedly disagree. If you want to ask why someone thinks a certain way or if they agree with a certain candidate's position on issue X, do so respectfully. This topic will operate under the idea that all opinions are equally valid.

Anyway, now that that's over, I'm 18, so this will be my first time voting, and I will be voting for Donald Trump. I'm registered Republican, but that was only to vote in the primaries (which I missed because of work anyway). I consider myself independent, and one thing that really made me want to vote for Trump was his "America first" nationalist message, which I completely agree with. I don't agree with him on everything (namely banning Muslim immigration), but I stand by him on almost everything else.

Also, here is my political compass test result:

EDIT: If you do not have an opinion or do not want to contribute to a discussion, please don't reply. We get it, you don't like politics. This thread is not for you

Ted Cruz is my first choice, since he has proven to be the only candidate who loves the constitution. That said, he is now mathematically unable to win enough delegates to secure the GOP nomination, so........

Here's my political compass.
[User Posted Image]

I'm a registered independent, but I honestly don't think I'll be voting for anyone.
Trump and Sanders just seem too radical for me, I feel like Clinton is just a political snake, and being basically trans, I don't agree with Ted Cruz at all.
I just don't see how any of them could do any good imo. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sorry I haven't offered too much insight into the presidential election, but if I could, I would vote Trump in order to prevent Hillary from being president. Either Bernie or Trump would be much better than her.

As much as I dislike both Sanders and Trump, I honestly agree.
Also I didn't know how close my views are to BWM's :0

This topic has already frustrated me with most of its posts. But, as I said previously...

People should stop talking politics in the US, period. News outlets should just report what our politicians do, not commentate on it, and move on. And the public should keep their opinions to themselves and speak with their votes... assuming they actually do so in the first place.

I think discussing politics is healthy and a great way to open people up to different ideas. If somebody is raised in a super conservative or super liberal family, they're going to stay that way unless they get new information to challenge their beliefs. Not saying it's wrong to be very conservative or very liberal, but it's healthy to understand the opposite side.

I remember doing this test and I got a result that was very far to the left and about a 5th of the way up on the Authoritarian bit. And I think that fits me like a glove. I identify as a Socialist, and I grew up in a Labor voting family.

Yeah, talking politics can be great and healthy... if you're not in the United States (or a country with, say, a dictator in power). Fact is, maybe some well-educated folk will be open-minded to these conversations, but I have yet to have a political conversation with someone and get them to see where I'm coming from.

And frankly, I'm all for different ideas. But when said ideas are talking about a candidate who, if elected, would put me (as a member of a minority religious faith and someone with physical disabilities) in danger of harm or discrimination, they lose all credibility in my eyes.

I support Sanders.

I don't particularly trust Clinton but in the grand scheme I'd probably vote for her over Trump or Cruz. Even if it's a vague empty promise at least she actually said something about free community college, whereas the other two (or at least Trump) seem more content with accusing me of wanting a free lunch.

To the people above who have spoken about supporting Trump or Cruz, I'm genuinely curious as to why. I'm willing to have a civil discussion about it and I want to have an in depth answer and talk about it (GB, PM, here, wherever), because I frankly cannot see why anyone would support either of them. Then again the chart shows me biased.

I'd rather have people discuss politics and world issues like that than tabloid celebrity news about people who have done nothing to contribute to society (art, science, history, etc.).

But look at how pathetic he is.

If the Republican Party doesn't work together and figure out who they want as a nominee, Clinton is going to win, and Kasich and Cruz aren't helping anything. But whatever, I don't particularly like anyone, but I only really dislike one person.

I thought he was a socialist?

A "Democratic socialist," like CAV said. It's just, some of his supporters make him sound like a communist, or spout communist rhetoric (e.g. "people's revolution" "power for the people") when talking about him. The reality is, if this guy somehow won, nothing he's promising would come to fruition because Congress would not back it unless Democrats got a working majority in both houses, which I find unlikely to happen. Or, alternatively, the Supreme Court would rule some or all of that legislation unconstitutional.

I support Trump because of his policies. I know that's odd to say, you'd think that's why anyone would vote for a candidate, but there are some people who are voting for Trump because he's not politically correct and because he comes off as a tough guy. Now, those two things are a factor in why I like him, but it's not my main reason. Also, the media lies. It twists things and puts words in his mouth. I'll post a video below showing how they do that. I like that he's anti-war, an anti-interventionist, tough on illegal immigration, wants to give states more power over their education, wants to cut all interest on federal student loans to 0, is socially liberal (doesn't care what bathroom trans people use or if gays wanna get married, also doesn't care if people do weed and will leave the decision to the states), and many other things. He's one of the most successful businessmen in the world and will do wonders negotiating deals with other countries, and with congress. An example is the wall. Will there be a wall? Probabaly not, he'll compromise and tighten security, penalize businesses who employ illegal immigrants, make it harder for them to get on welfare, etc. Illegal immigration is costing the U.S. too much money, and too many drugs are flooding into country. But anyway, yeah. Trump even admitted in a NYT interview that the wall, as well as everything else, is negotiable. He's not some far-right teapartier, he's actually very moderate, and will work with both republicans and democrats.

Here's the video showing the truth about some of Donald's political stances and quotes. It's not to make you want to support him, just for you to be informed. This is one of the videos that got me investigating and really researching these issues and realizing Trump is the candidate I wanted to support

That's racist.

But anyway, we can continue this elsewhere if you want, but I don't want the topic getting derailed and turning into something horrible. I'll just state my opinion real quick and we'll agree to disagree (agree?). Here are the facts: his position is to temporarily ban Muslim immigrants (presumably ones from high-risk countries like Syria) until we can vet them better, because there is a large percentage of radicalized people trying to get into our country. This ban would be similar to the ban on Japanese immigrants during WW2, and most recently, Obama's ban on Iraqi refugees in 2011.

My opinion: absolutely none of that is racist. It doesn't fit the definition of racism (believing one race is inferior to another).
QueenChrysalis Green Sparx Gems: 465
#29 Posted: 07:01:56 03/05/2016
Lets be clear here, are they banning Syrians or are they banning MUSLIMS? Because Muslims include Muslims who live in Africa, who have nothing to do with terrorism, and even Muslims living in western countries like Europe and Australia. Would a Muslim living in Canada be allowed to cross the border under Trump's rules? Or would they be bared entry because their religion means they must be a terrorist?

No, it's not. American is a nationality. Caucasian is a race. But that would include white people living in the entirety of the world, not just America. His comments may not be racist, but they are xenophobic. I fail to see how a guy like that would protect our country. It is far more likely that he will alienate our current allies, and anger countries that already hate us.

And frankly, it's not the terrorists the average American citizen needs protection from. It's other Americans. Go look up the comparisons between the number of Americans who have died from terrorist attacks and the number who have been killed in a homicide/mass shooting by an American since roughly the turn of the millennium. Actually, you don't have to. Here, I saved you the trouble: http://www.politifact.com/trut...and-terrorism-/

You will find we Americans are far more efficient at killing our fellow citizens than the terrorists are.

I was saying that out of irony, since Islam isn't a race either. The issue isn't whether or not Americans are killing more Americans than extremists are, it's preventing any more needless violence and targeting a huge contributor of violence (namely, the political ideology of radical Islam). But I digress. We can continue this elsewhere if you want, but I do not want this topic to be a topic of debate, but rather discussion and exchanging of opinions, which are all equally valid here. I helped fan this flame so I will go back and delete a few of my replies

That's a little bit of a stretch. I was talking to CAV about this exact thing earlier, the congress will likely be divided enough to block the more radical ideas. (i.e. the Great Wall of Mexico). Plus, he'll have presidential advisors if he does get elected. I don't think they'd let him say anything stupid enough to cause a nuclear holocaust.

Still, it's probably a very slim one. Isn't Clinton beating him by a lot still?
