Is cannibalism ever acceptable?

Many philosophers and cultural anthropologists refer to it as the ultimate test of ethical relativism.

It depends how you look at is sociologically. For the tribes that practice it, it's a common occurrence, but since modern society has developed norms like "eating people is bad", it's deviant to us.

It's all relative to the society that examines it, really.

Yeah, that's exactly what ethical relativism is.

Gold star for you.

It's like how Americans outrage over other countries eating cats and dogs. We only view it as weird because it's not something that we do here. If it was a common occurrence to eat people in Western culture, we would probably have a handful of non people eating vegans, but that's it.

The only instance I can really think of where it could be absolutely necessary with no other possible options whatsoever or chance of rescue (e.g. stranded on island or mountain) is if nuclear warfare ravaged the Earth and the few survivors left cannot eat the plants and animals left behind due to radiation. Even then I think humans would also be radioactive in flesh (you're better off just inventing Rad-Away).

I don't see any other circumstances where cannibalism would be morally acceptable or the only logical option.

Ethical relativism is to you what labeling theory is to me.
We just learned it differently is all. You understand it from a anthropologist's perspective, I understand it from a sociologist's perspective.

In a situation where I was forced to eat people or animals, I'd probably just die tbh.

I'm weak. ;c

I don't agree with eating people at all. However, I do understand that some cultures do it, and that it might be a religious thing.

It just grosses me out, tbh.

I agree with Strider and Bumble, but it also may depend on the situation. Like if I'm in the middle of nowhere with someone else and they die and I'm starving, I'm not going to let myself die because cannibalism isn't "socially acceptable."

I once heard that if someone gives you a part of their body and tells you to eat it, it's legal. Look it up. Idk if that's still true, though. I also have no idea why that would be legal. Or why anyone would even think of that. :/

Not to mention human meat is usually thought to be disgusting, last time I ran into this kind of discussion at least I recall it apparently being like super greasy pig tasting.

Though to be fair aside from cultural reasons, people definately aren't going to eat people because of the taste where it isn't accepted unless they're obsessed with it.

I remember hearing something awhile back about two guys agreeing to eat a small part of each other in the name of science.

They're not fooling anyone though, those kinky bastards
