I kind of want to volunteer for this crisis text hotline, because I could actually help people, and hopefully even save some lives. I'd only have to work 2 hours a week over the summer, and of course I wouldn't get any pay, but I'd be able to help people. I've been in the same boat as some of the people that use this kind of service, so I feel a weird kinship with them, but I have a really major issue: I don't deal with death well at all. I even cried when my friends dog that I'd never even met died, so I'm uncertain if doing something like this is right for me. I'm pretty people smart, but I don't know what I'd do if something went wrong.
Should I do it?

No pay? No to that! Demand they pay you to even consider working for them!
Really, it's up to you in the end. If you want to help people, it could be a good way. However, there is a major issue at hand of things going wrong. Being a crisis hotline, there's bound to be many people who call in because things have gone horribly wrong already. It wouldn't be easy, if anything it'll be tough shouldering the burden of the troubles everyone calling in is facing and helping every one of them through it.

I've considered doing something like this myself, but I had the same issue with it too. I don't deal with death very well at all, and the thought of not knowing what happened to the people on the other end terrifies me. So if you're anything like me, I would say no. You could obviously be a lot of help to a lot of people, but if it negatively impacted you it wouldn't be worth it.

It would be a wonderful thing to do, but if you don't feel 100% up to the task, I wouldn't.
On a side note, I think I might do this sort of thing myself......I have some experience with talking people down from the ledge.... |

Same as Metallo. As cool as it is to help, you can't let that get to you too much as it'll only channel the stress to yourself.
I'm a good listener from what people say, but terrible at advice. I'd rather use that to help friends who know when I have no idea how to fix the thing but will stay and hear about it anyway.

Something like this requires full dedication and control, keep that in mind.
