yeah so for our speaking assessment, which goes towards our GCSE, we have to do a 4-minute presentation and mine is in 10 days....i have NO CLUE what to talk about. But here's where i need advice:

I would like to do a speech about what it's like to live with dyspraxia and being diagnosed so late in my life, but I don't want people to think I'm bringing attention to myself....thoughts??

I can't tell you what to say of course but I can give you advice. Make sure it's well structured and the sentences are grammatically correct of course.
Speak clearly and make sure it's loud enough for everyone to hear.
Avoid fillers like "UM" and "er".
Give eye contact to the audience.
Don't read the presentation off a piece of paper - best to memorise it as it makes the speech naturally more 'expressive'.
When I did it I had a piece of paper for prompt notes, dunno if you are still allowed that.

I have done this before and this is what the teachers are looking for when watching you.

I think talking about a disorder people don't know much about is a great idea! However, I wouldn't make the speech entirely about you with the condition. It would make it feel like you're giving a life story rather than an informative speech.

Instead, modify the topic of your essay on just Dyspraxia itself. Define it, give some statistics and facts, and then use your personal experience to elaborate the impact it can put on a person. It will make your speech more rounded and informative. It has a little bit of logos, pathos, and even ethos! Those are important appeals in any form of essay and speech

It's good to remember that when it boils down to it....nobody cares a lot. Even if you botched it up, the only person that would remember by the end of the day is you. Just have enough material to carry you through the full running time. If you do that and keep good eye contact and make sure you are loud enough, you'll do fine.

Practice your speech beforehand to the point you're confident you remember everything and it will be a breeze.

People are always shocked when I give speeches in a confident voice. I guess being a quiet Asian gives off a weird impression. *shrugs*

Usually when I write speeches I try to express it fromt I own personal experience perspective, that way the words come easily to my mind as everyhting written has been already been experienced.

I would also change the "I" subject to a more generic or impersonal one, that way it will seem you are not talking about you, but rather of dyspraxia itself.

Good luck, I had my GCSEs last year and I know how stressful it can be. For some unknown reason, our speeches were cancelled so we never got to do them but we were taught how to do a good speech and I've done a couple in college so I guess I've got a bit of advice:

  • Try to keep eye contact.
  • Don't look at your script too often, try to memorise as much as you can.
  • Just try to speak as loudly as possible.

  • And in terms of people thinking that you're drawing attention to yourself, don't worry about that - it's a big part of you. I know myself because I have dyspraxia and I really haven't told many people about it whatsoever so I think that's really great of you to do that! Good luck and I'm sure that you're gonna do great!
