Twitch VOD link with correct timestamp (id34377308 - 13h17m58s)
Install 'ReChat for Twitch' extension (but w/o interacting with Twitch Chat, chatlog will expire after couple of weeks since broadcast)

The Games Done Quick 2016 winter edition is approaching, with the event starting at Sunday of 2016 January 03! The topic was created notify that there's a Spyro 1 any% speedrun!

  • The speedrunner is ChrisLBC (YouTube, Twitch)
  • This is an any percent run (any%), which means the only goal is to reach to the end credits as fast as possible, not collect all the gems and eggs, which would be a 100% speedrun instead.
  • The any% world record is 38m 55s by the same speedrunner, which was done in 2015 Dec 27!
  • The estimated speedrun runtime with any potential errors in mind is 45 minutes.
  • Following devices used for the event: A PS2 (model not mentioned), and the original game.
  • The speedrun attempt takes place at Saturday in 2015 January 09 at AM 08:42 PST.
  • The scheduling of this speedrun is SUBJECT TO CHANGE:
  • CLICK HERE for the most updated schedule and covering other timezones than PST
  • If you MISSED the speedrun after it happened, I will find a video link if possible.

I'll try and update the topic if there's enough interest here.

This post is created both as a reminder that the Spyro 1 any% speedrun is coming tomorrow Saturday at 2016 January 08, and to notify that the time of the event is changed from AM 08:21 PST to AM 08:42 PST. Once again, refer to the schedule for timezones other than Pacific time.

Looking forward to this!

UPDATE! The Twitch VOD link to the speedrun with the specified timestamp has been added since there has yet to be a YouTube upload. If you wish to experience how Twitch Chat reacts to the speedrun, install an extension called ReChat for Twitch on their website as if you're watching the speedrun live (but without talking to chat); note that the chatlog will expire after a couple of weeks since the broadcast.

Well, at iSO's request I went back to watch the whole thing, and though I'm still that one fan with zero nostalgia for the classics since I never played them, can't help but appreciate that the game still back then had such great design to allow all the amazing ways to maximize collectibles and movement without nonstop animation cancelling or glitching out of most of it. Not all collectathons can age so well when it comes to the basics(though I heard optimization and the casual gameplay is an entirely different matter there), which is also why it has lasted until these days. My only complaint on the run was the barely audible guy, someone should've gotten him water or a cough drop or something because his voice would nearly disappear as he went on explaining.

Also, a bit offtopic, but all this talk of Super Charge and Flame Charge mades me even more upset at VV not making him a supercharger. Replacing him with Pop Fizz wasn't just an easy way out, they missed out on a 18-year old reference that creates the new gameplay by itself.

Thanks for taking my request Bitfrost! smilie Never actually played the classics? That was a nice tidbit of a thought of yours considering the viewpoint on collectibles by design and getting to them. In regards of the speedrun, yes it definitely differs between casual playing and optimization. smilie

By optimizing is to minimizing the runtime in exchange of a higher skill barrier in terms of dexterity (of maneuvering the controller with your hands optimal to a speedrun), and stamina (on not letting your hands rest during non-loading moments). I would not dare to make my hands cramp under those definite circumstances! smilie I need a moment of rest after playing a level or two; which speaks to the speedrunner's dedication of specializing in a particular game and mastering it with faster runtimes!

They didn't make Spyro a Supercharger? Like making Spyro being an actual vehicle? smilie Such a funny thought of being a large metal dragon vehicle~ Vroom!

Actually, it would've been Spyro DRIVING a vehicle and given an updated appearance and completely new powers. And a new name.

He could've still had the new moveset that comes along though - maybe be able to summon crystal ramps at will that give him the old Supercharge(probably with another name so no one gets confused) with a damaging aura for the entire duration he's running without hitting anything. Dunno, just giving some random ideas, VV had months to think of that and still went for giving Pop Fizz an instrument and calling it a day.

I never had the chance to play the classics - only neighbors had PS1s and their copies would crash whenever they felt like it, and no one nearby has a PS3/4 for the ports; yeah I could try that other method but I can barely finish the games I like without long breaks, let alone one that hasn't aged too nicely :I

To be fair, TFB were known as the ones who actually played the original games for references and research. Like them, adding Spyro, Cynder, Sparx, Malefor, a character based on Moneybags, Munitions Forge....

VV may not have played the original games and simply just went on doing their games without seeing past Spyro researches.
