Ashton Carter, United States Secretary of Defense, announced today that all roles in the military, including those previously closed to women such as special forces, will now be completely open to women.
Most people are standing 50/50 on the issue. The naysayers argue that women are incapable of doing the job period.
Discuss. (But please do a god damn Google search of what special forces actually are before you post)

That's pretty cool tbh. I'm sure there are plenty of women who could handle the job.

I don't think it's a good idea, and I'm not afraid to say so either. I do think that there are some military positions that shouldn't be open for women at all.
In most cases it simply comes down to entry standards. They obviously wouldn't be lowered just so that less capable men could also get the position, so why should they be lowered for women? Very few women can reach the male standards for the tougher positions, and while I'm not 100% opposed to letting those who do have the job, it still introduces other problems. Military is not all about fighting and shooting. A big part of it is social interaction, and working as a team in harsh conditions with different people doesn't leave a lot of room for error. One of the bigger problems is that women in military outfits often disrupt unit cohesion. They don't do it deliberately (I do have faith in the motivations of military women), and it actually has more to do with the behavior of men who are around women. You see, if there are women present in a heavily male-oriented group, the men will feel inclined to focus on competing with each other in order to impress the women and --to be blunt-- to mate with them. The women are not immune to this either, and can also be distracted by the men in a similar manner. This in turn introduces a host of all kinds of problems, from relationship trouble and loss of trust to possible unwanted pregnancies and fights. In combat situations men will also naturally feel inclined to protect women from harm, even at the expense of the mission. The cause of this is found in the human biology, and it would take a lot of brainwashing to trump those instincts. Women also suffer (I think that's the right word to use in this case) from menstrual cycles, which can severely impact their abilities to fulfill their mission, especially in combat situations. Women would have to remain cool, collected and strong despite this, which understandably would be very hard for some of them. One thing that also shouldn't be ignored is that in the field there is no space for any sort of privacy, which would affect women more heavily than it does men. In the field there is no time for potty breaks, and you are often forced --by circumstances-- to urinate and defecate in the near vicinity of the unit, not even mentioning the lack of personal hygiene. Here's a pretty good article on the subject that I read a while back. Didn't know it was going to come in handy here; http://www.usatoday.com/story/...women/71971416/ I also have some personal experiences about women in the military, and I can talk about them if you guys want to, but they really have nothing to do with this as I'm not saying that women shouldn't serve in the military at all. There are simply certain positions in which I don't think they shouldn't be allowed. |

I've also heard the argument that men will go out of the way to protect women and therefore put themselves at risk. After all, if you're a medic and you've got a male and a female who've both been shot, who do natural instincts tell you to help first? Still, while the average female can't meet the physical standards for special ops (hell, the average male can't), I do believe there are some above-average females who could hack it. Just don't compromise the standards is all I'm asking for. |
