Wii U controller options

New to wii u and trying to set it up for my son
Can I deactivation the wii u game pad and can he play with wii remote and nunchuck only

We can play 2 player with 2nd player using wii remote and nunchuck
Any help

The best way to accomplish this, is to move the gamepad out of range, then start the game. I do this all the time so I can play with the Wiimote, and the game pad instead of the nun chuck.

So move wii u pad far away
Then turn on system and use wii remote and nunchuck

You don't need to deactivate the WiiU gamepad.
Right on the Titlescreen Press the start or (+) button with any non-wiiu gamepad and he should be on player one assigned.
