I've mentioned in multiple posts before about my idea for a free to play Skylanders game, and I still think it would be a great idea....but I just thought of something. What if future games not only had Adventure Packs unlocking new stages to play, but also regular DLC as well?
Think about it: in addition to maybe 4 new levels via Adventure Packs ( as SA & TT had...SF only had 2 ), regular DLC could be purchased & downloaded. Each DLC expansion could add a few new levels with new story content without constantly throwing out $30-40 packs with a single stage ( the point being they can do a few special ones, but still add more in a traditional DLC format ). Say...3 new story stages for $15? For Xbox & Playstation players, the DLC could also add new achievements/trophies....
This also ties into my F2P idea, as the game could be updated with new stages on a regular basis particularly as new games & figures are released.

The only way I could see digital dlc working is if it is only made after development on the final game is finished and is released throughout the game's lifespan to keep it from getting boring. But that is why we have figures in waves, to keep fans interested in the game long enough to stick around for the sequel.
Truth be told, I really don't like the idea of digital dlc for Skylanders, and I can't see it being a huge success for such a physical toy-driven series (excuse the pun). Besides, wait around for a bit and the Adventure Level packs go down in price substantially, like all Skylander figures.

We all have Instant Skylanders already. That's enough imo.

as far as Instant Skylanders go, I think they should allow digital only players to purchase Instants for all characters/vehicles ( maybe have the Instants slightly nerfed from the actual toys so they're still superior? ) That's part of my F2P idea too. |

I really think digitals should exist for every character, it would be great for those of us who can't find a Blackout anywhere, and don't want to spend $30 on Ebay or Amazon. There's a handful of characters that I am convinced I'll never own, unless I get lucky like I did with Ghost Roaster.
You had an idea for a Free to Play Skylanders too? I've been thinking for a while how nice that would be, as long as it ahd online PVP and leaderboards. |

$30 Blackout? Cheapest I typically find is $60-70 range ( Spotlight near $100 )... And yeah, I thought up an idea where they do a full Skylanders game but as a free to play model with the microtransactions being the Instant digital versions of the characters. Those of us with the toys and a portal could scan our collections to unlock them ( including variants & magic items, which wouldn't be available w/o the toys. Bowser & DK would remain Nintendo only obviously. ). Adventure items would unlock new stages that could also be bought digitally as well. Once in a while the game could be updated with new levels and Skylanders. Hadn't put any thought into PvP or leaderboards though, since I have no interest in that stuff, but that is something that would fit well into the game design. In addition, all gimmicklanders would have functionality in the levels. as you explore you could find element gates, dual element gates, feats of strength, Supercharger gates, vehicle gates, Traptanium gates & crystals, Giant chests, heavy objects for Giants to lift, Swap Zones ( though IMO they should be more puzzle based rather than mostly bad minigames )...if they can make traps & villains work like Trap Team ( maybe even with NEW villains ) they could include Villain Caches too. |
