Movie Sequels... Good Idea Or Bad Idea? [CLOSED]

Good morning/afternoon/evening wherever you may be.

I was just looking at a clip of Iron Man 3 and i wasn't that impressed, because it seemed like the character of Iron Man had lost something.

I think that some sequels can work depending on the franchise, St. Trinian's just seemed to get better.

What are your thoughts on movie sequels?

Some work, some don't. The problem is when you try to force a gimmick(main characters' offspring! Same adventure BUT IN SPACE! Villain monster was actually a whole species!)or pull plot threads out of nowhere; some stories are just finished in one movie and some aren't.

This. Something like Harry Potter works because the whole series was planned.

Isn't the entire story of Iron Man 3 based around Tony Stark losing everything and having to rebuild while also suffering PTSD following the events of The Avengers?

Sequels are perfectly fine if you have a good reason to make one. For example the end of Transformers 4 demands there be a sequel (and we will get one anyway), while the end of Furious 7 could serve as the end of the franchise and doesn't really have much of a way to continue it (but we will get one anyway).

Really depends on the series. If you have it all planned or the first movie didn't get the main characters to the end of the tale/plot then should be carefully plans out and make sure you know where you are going.

If we were to say which movies should get a sequel should be the ones with ongoing plots, not something you can make up on the spot and expect it to be good (Cars 2 is a good example of this).

I liked the first one, but the sequel ... not really. Something about musicals just turns me away.

On the topic itself ... I do support sequels, depending on what it's for. Like Legend of the Guardians: The owls of Ga'Hoole ... they have room for a sequel, especially since they can follow what happens in the other books.

Didn't they butcher that story into bits? Never had any interest in the books, but I read that changing some characters around broke the plot.

I think that's because, to my knowledge, the film was trying to combine the first three books into a single hour and a half film. A Series of Unfortunate Events film did the same thing and as someone who read those books it definitely messed with the story.

Though I haven't read the Ga'Hoole books. I thought the film was nice and would've liked to see another.

Sequels can be good, but Sequelitis is a thing too.

Depends on the movie. Like if it's set up for a sequel it can be good (like Harry Potter and other series that were actually made to be a series). But a lot of the time it just seems unnecessary and just seems like a way to make more money. Like Disney has a nasty habit of making completely unneeded sequels, with only a few exceptions imo.

The problem mainly happens when sequels are made for the wrong reasons.

Are you making a sequel because a big corporation wants more money? Bad reason. Are you making a sequel because you feel inspired to delve further into a fictional world you created and explore untapped potential? Good reason.

It all depends of various reasons. If a movie is planned to have a sequel, it's good. If a movie is not planned to get a sequel, but the producers want to make one, it all depends of how they will handle. For example, Toy Story was not exactly build with sequels in mind, but we have sequels, and they're good. Now, a sequel just made for money can be bad. For example, good part of the direct-to-video sequels of the world.
