Do you think it would be nearly as popular?

Certainly not. Skylanders was originally Spyro's Kingdom, and if references to Spyro games and having Spyro, Cynder, Malefor in the comics ( I guess you could also count Sparx, since he's still in the game ), I don't think the game would be as popular. I do still think it would be popular though, but being based off Spyro allowed it to get attention right away.

Maybe not, but it's kind of hard to say. It seemed like it needed a familiar name/face to help jump start it and get people to at least try it. The drama from the Spyro fandom probably helped spread the word and folks who wouldn't have seen it otherwise did.

Probably not to adults who grew up with Spyro to notice but I doubt kids would care either way but at least there's a good chance kids will discover Spyro's history.

Spyro probably wouldn't even be around today. I have really mixed feelings about that. On one hand, I don't like Skylanders. On the other, it DOES get Spyro's name out there. But that branches off into "Does Activison even care about Spyro anymore?" and yadda yadda yadda.

Spyro in franchise and in character would probably be as dead as Crash, but Skylanders MAYBE would have had just a rocky start. Spyro isn't the only good character in there, and to be honest several had better designs as soon as SSA.
Now at least the character lives on, and kids and teenagers do go find his old games on occasion despite what whiny genwunners won't stop saying on tumblr.

I heard somewhere (can't remember where) that crash was meant to be in Skylanders instead of spyro

The rumors were that Crash would be a Skylander in Swap Force or Trap Team iirc. Skylanders always started as a Spyro game, as the developer stories say at least.

Honestly, if the game didn't have Spyro, I'd still probably have tried it.

I definitely think DI would have had an even easier time beating Skylanders without Spyro to help give it a head start.

It still would be doing relatively well with kids though.

Maybe not as big, but I feel it still would've had a fairly large impact in their world of gaming with the use of NFC and Toys-to-Life. Not everyone who got into Skylanders did so for Spyro. To this day I have still never touched a Spyro gave aside from Skylanders.

I agree with the "It would've had a rockier start, but still would've caught on" mindset. The Toys-to-Life concept has proven tremendously popular with kids, and a lack of Spyro would not have prevented that.

In all honesty, I feel the main reason it's even considered a Spyro game is because they just wanted to help it get off the shelves, and appointing a famous character to it would've seriously helped (after all the complaints about Spyro looking more like a pug then a dragon died down). I think it'd still be popular enough to get where we are today without Spyro or Cynder though. I mean, you replace those two with original characters and what's different? Not a whole lot, really.

Worth saying that, originally, Toys for Bob was considering making a Crash game, but, Spyro was decided. At this time, they don't have a proper idea of Skylanders. But, this shows that, if they decided to use Crash... He probably would be a Skylander.

Wackier than both Skylanders and original Crash, I'm sure. TFB could be as crazy as they wished with that universe as a base.

I don't know exactly if they make a Toys to Life game if they choose Crash. If they do, it will probably be very different from Skylanders.
