When is Nightmare mode unlocked?

Is it the same as normal where you unlock it for beating the story once? Or do you maybe get it from the start this time? (I can hope)

I was able to select Nightmare mode at the beginning.

No play through needed. Just select it as a standard difficulty setting.

Glad heroic challenges are gone. Imagine doing 165 per skylander. That's 27225 challenges. No thank you.

No doubt there will be a very rare and special hat available after Story Mode is complete in Nightmare Mode.

I saw some footage of people beating Nightmare,you unlock the same thing as you do any other mode. Won't go into detail of what it is,but yeah, no bonus other than xp/gold gain.
