Can you use Kaos in the main story?

Being UK I wont be getting the game till Friday, and wondered, if I recall correctly Kaos is a flying "vehicle" when you use the trophy, and wondered if he was exclusive to the racing segments, or if you could use him in the main story in place of a skylander+vehicle.

I believe that you can only use the villains in the racing modes of the game.
