Portal compatibility problems

I recently purchased a secondhand copy of Swap Force for an xbox360. Even though I don't like the game it was only $10 including the portal. Just as well it came with the portal because the Trap Team portal I had plugged in wouldn't register. It came up saying no portal could be detected. So I plugged in the Swap Force one and it worked fine.

But aren't the new portals meant to work with all of the old games? Should the xbox TT portal work with SSF, SG & SSA?

X360 one has a weird glitch that you can only plug it in after the game has been opened; it won't be detected if you plug it while the console is off for some reason no matter the game, and yes, it has backwards compatibility. Maybe that's the issue?

Yes the TT one came with the 360 starter pack.

I'll try loading the disc and then plugging the portal in and see if that helps. Thanks guys.
