If you want a handheld version, yeah.

That rumour is from an article that has tons of already blatantly wrong information, so I wouldn't bother believing even a single word of it.

The only thing we know for sure is that they'll be revealing more information about the NX in 2016, probably at E3. The very earliest I'd expect is a holiday 2016 release, and even that seems unlikely imo.

...Though if it DOES hit the holiday 2016 release, it could very well get next year's Skylanders game as a launch title, like the Wii U did even though it was released over a month after Giants hit the other consoles.
There are far too many unknowns to say for sure, though - we don't even know for sure if it's gonna be a handheld or home console (or both?) yet!

Nitendo could be doing this thou, could be a new system that can use the wii u pad and wii/u stuff already. Maybe the system comes control-less to lower cost much like they did with the new 3ds, thou that would be very strange and confusing more so then the lack of a power supply.

Isn't it a bit too early to be talking about Skylanders 6?

if theres a skylander 6 it would just follow the format of how the xboxone and ps4 games for swap force were handled with later release if its past a certain point of the normal release table.

What about skylanders 10, do you think it will be on the next Xbox system?
