I just started a new world today, and this is all I've spent my time on really, other than like 30 mins caving. I could farm for days.

If you care to know what it looked like before, here.

So much space wasted on water blocks...

I'd post a picture of what I've been building lately, but it doesn't really look all that grand and it doesn't fit into a single picture.

It's not a waste if it's put to use. It's hydrating the soil which will be used to provide food. And this is just a world that I made today, so there's much more exciting things in my other ones.

I know, but there's so much of it. One block of water can hydrate 80 blocks of farmland around it (up to four blocks in any direction, including diagonally).

Probably more impressive stuff than I've got. I never get anything finished, because I always start out making a nice house with all the essentials and enough food production to keep me going (chickens, wheat etc.), but then I always get lost in trying to create massive networks of rivers, roads, lighthouses to find my way around.

Only one block of water is needed for a four block radius.

I think it's more aesthetically pleasing if you have them in rows like that. If you just use a block it looks odd.

You should at least connect them. With the way you have it you have to jump to them (unless you want to stand a block below, walking around in water), which can decay the farmland.
