There was a man standing at the water's edge.

Waluigi, a rebellious young man in his best years, stood alone on the beach, gazing over the ocean-colored water with his determined sable orbs. His heterochromatic hair danced lightly in the ocean breeze. He tried to keep still despite his impatient excitement as he clacked the heels of his pastel boots together. He wore a russet bikini top, his auburn back covered only by a thin bit of string, and he relished the feel of fresh air against his cocoa legs. His multihued locks flowed out in pigtails from either side of his head, complementing his stubborn swarthy visage. A color-mixed moustache brushed against his lip. A prominent scar stood out on his copper skin. Beautiful wings sprouted from his back. He stood, awaiting his love.

It all started when he found himself in mortal danger. He truly feared that his life would end that day, but Lucina was his unexpected savior. From then on, they were inseparable. They shared every part of their life with each other. That was how it was to this very day.

Waluigi's obsidian depths spotted Lucina further down on the beach, closer to the roaring sea. Her lovely coiffure rippled behind her in a turquoise wave. Her orbs were turned toward the ocean, hidden from Waluigi's sight, but he knew and loved their immaculate ocean-colored hue. She was dressed in refined garb befitting her station. She had a toned but slender body covered with healthily color-touched pearly skin. A symbol marked her skin. As Waluigi drew nearer, he caught a note of her familiar scent of lingering iron and steel. He smiled to himself. It always reminded him of the time they shared. "Lucina," he called, walking towards her.

She stood at attention. "Waluigi! I'm glad."

Waluigi smirked and flicked a bit of hair over his shoulder. "Good to see you. C'mon." They began their leisurely walk along the ocean's edge. "You know, Lucina," he began, "it's great having days off like this. You should loosen up more often."

Lucina frowned a little. "Waluigi... diligence is an important virtue ."

"Yeah? You keep telling me that." Waluigi crossed his arms behind his head. "But I think you're being too hard on yourself."

Lucina lapsed into a momentary silence, contemplating his words. "Perhaps... but, to tell you the truth, I often think... that you are too negligent, Waluigi."

"Negligent? Ouch. What a sick burn. Someone, toss me an elixir." She rolled her eyes. "Come on, Lucina. Don't you love me as I am?"

"Well..." she replied, her voice trailing off.

That did in secret wound his resolute heart. But he was careful to show no sign of it. "Heh. Don't feel obligated to stay with me, or anything. I do it because I love you. I don't want you to feel any differently."

"Waluigi!" she exclaimed, openly hurt. "It's not that! I love you. I just wish... I just wish you'd listen. That's all."

"Lucina." His voice had gone equally serious. "Do you really worry about that?" Lucina dipped her head down, spheres covered by her royal blue locks. "... Look. I know I'm a rascal. But when it comes to you, I'll always look out for you." He reached out to tuck one strand of sapphire hair behind her ear. "I know I haven't given you much reason to, but... trust me. All right?"

Lucina murmured something too quiet to hear.

"You say something?"

"Lucina... you're right. And I... I do trust you," she whispered.

Waluigi laid a peck on her hair. "You're lovely. Thanks. ... It means a lot." They joined hands as they continued to walk along the beach.

bothering him, although Waluigi didn't want to admit it. He didn't want to burden Lucina with it anyway -- he was supposed to be the stronger one! Still, his other oath wouldn't leave him alone.

All the same, Lucina seemed to notice. She looked at Waluigi cautiously for a moment before murmuring, "Waluigi? Is... something wrong?"

"Lucina... it's..."

And at that moment everything came together, all of the magic and the hurt that had been building that day, and she locked her windows to her soul with his and whispered, "You can tell me."

It was like a floodgate burst, or some barrier of fear had been struck down. Waluigi shook his head and everything came out at once. "Lucina... I love you. But I love my country, too. I swore to serve her, and I... I worry that I cannot love both. What if I were made to choose? What then? I... I don't want to put you in danger, Lucina. And I don't want to put either of you second, heh. But still... I love you. I just don't know what to do, and it burns."

Lucina listened silently and solemnly. At last, when all the words had left him and he was at a loss for words, she reached out to him and took a deep breath to whisper back, "Waluigi... I... I don't know what it's like, to live with your other oath... but... I'm sorry, Waluigi. I wish... I wish I could help." Waluigi's eyes began to burn, and he abruptly pulled her into a fierce embrace. Her orbs widened at first, but then she too felt overwhelmed by emotion and succumbed to the warmth of his touch.

"You," Waluigi whispered, his breath hot on her ear. "As long as you're here, I'll be all right."

"Waluigi..." Lucina laid a hand on his shoulder, pushing him lightly so that they parted enough to look each other in the eye. "The truth is, I... feel the same way about you."

Waluigi tilted his head forward, pressing their foreheads together, and whispered, "What is it, Lucina? Have you... been in pain, too?"

"Waluigi, it's..." Lucina took a shuddering breath and whispered, "I... I keep remembering it.... That day. Waluigi, I can't help myself! I don't want to think about it... it hurts, Waluigi. But even when I sleep, it comes back to me in my dreams. I can't forget, not for a moment.... Not a moment's peace."

Waluigi placed his hands on Lucina's cheeks, stroking her cheekbone as he soothed, "Lucina... it's terrible that that happened to you. Lucina, I just want you to remember, I love you." They held each other as tears trickled down cheeks and dripped onto the shifting sands to be carried away into the sea. Their pain dissipated into a mist swept out by the ocean breeze and toward the setting sun, where dark clouds began to loom into sight.

They basked in each other's quiet companionship for a few moments.

"By the way," Lucina said, trying to keep her voice level and the blush off her face and failing, "on our next date... could you, perhaps... wear something more, ah... covering?"

"I dress how I want!" Waluigi said with a frown.

"Um, forget I said anything," she hastily amended. By the magic power of love, Waluigi did somehow manage to forget the slight to his dress and things went back to normal.

"The sunset is so beautiful, isn't it?"

Waluigi lifted his head at Lucina's words to behold the dying sun's salmon radiance. But even as he replied, "It's nice," the atramentaceous clouds looming on the horizon worried him. "Lucina, those clouds look bad. Let's go back."

Lucina looked at him with such spotless spheres and asked, "Just a few moments more? I want to savor today."

"Just a few more moments," he relented.

They were unprepared for how swift, how brutal the coming storm was. The rain poured in torrents, bading the ocean itself to rise. Winds whipped about them and kept them from moving on the shifting sands. Soaking, shivering, they fought against the storm.

"Waluigi!" Lucina screamed against the wind. "Please, don't let go!"

"I won't!" Waluigi shouted back, his hand clasping hers firmly as he struggled upward on the beach. "Trust me, Lucina!"

"I'm so sorry!" Lucina sobbed. "I never should've asked--"

Her next words were drowned out by the crash of water. A wave knocked against Waluigi's side with incredible force, and in the moment he was stunned by the blow, he felt those calloused fingers slip through his.

He came to his senses, and he found himself alone on the beach.

"Lucina!!" he screamed. Without hesitation, he dove into the water. The waves tossed and rolled without mercy; he could hardly keep himself afloat. But the sight of that pale hand barely sticking from the water kept him moving forward.

For a sickening moment, those fingers slipped under the surface.

"NO!!!" Waluigi bellowed before a mouthful of water choked his voice and brought him back to his senses. He dove under. The water was dark and it stung his eyes, but he could see Lucina, drifting downward like a falling flower petal in spring. With a flurry of energy, he shot forth and grasped her limp hand, then kicked furiously at the water, lungs almost bursting, until they came to the surface.

Sputtering and choking, Waluigi caught his breath while struggling to keep Lucina above water. The cold and turbulent water was beginning to take its toll; he wasn't sure how much longer he could keep them alive.

Lucina sputtered and seemed to rouse. "Waluigi ... ...?" she murmured hoarsely.

"Hold on, Lucina," Waluigi gasped as he put forth all his energy into fighting the sea. "Hold on..."

"He had too much water in his lungs," the doctor told Lucina. "He pushed himself too hard on too little air. I'm sorry. He gave his life for you. He didn't make it."

Wracked with guilt and pain, Lucina buried her head in her hands and sobbed.
- - -

"I never knew anyone like him."

"He had a good heart deep inside of him."

"No one else had his skills. He'll never know how much he helped us."

Lucina sat on a chair by the coffin, her hands around her knees, her windows to her soul dry, her soul too numbed to grieve. The funeral attendees nodded to her as they passed. She was sorry she couldn't find the words to express her appreciation.

The reception lasted hours, but it seemed to Lucina that it was only moments before the crowd disappeared. She picked himself off the chair and turned to look into the coffin for the first time since the funeral started.

Eyes closed and still, Waluigi laid inside in a fine sable suit, his hands clasped over his chest. He could have been in a very deep sleep. Lucina fought the urge to reach out and nudge him awake. Waluigi was gone. Gone because of her. Because he loved her. Trembling, Lucina leaned in and laid a single kiss on his lips.
