will you give him it?

Seriously though, I need some advice on something. In English, I've got to do this solo talk as part of my course. I was ready to give it on Wednesday, but just as I was about to begin, my nerves got a hold of me and I just couldn't say anything because I was too afraid to do my talk in front of the class. Soon afterwards my teacher asked if I was ready to do my talk, to which I replied "no". I don't really know why I'm so afraid to do the talk as I've done 3 solo talks in my high school not that long ago(One in 2012, one in 2013 and another one back in November 2014).

Once class had ended, she asked me what happened. I explained the situation and she was cool with it, but she said I had to do it on Friday. The problem is, I fear my nerves will get in the way once again and I'll have to skip it. But if I don't do it, then I'm almost guaranteed to fail English as the solo talks a required part to pass it. If it helps, my talk is on how powerful supermarkets are(not my choice, it's what I had to do for the talk).

So, anybody got any tips on how to overcome my nerves?

I know this might sound kind of weird, but if you're a coffee drinker then that might help a bit? I know whenever I get some caffeine in me I become really hyper and excited for things, which helps a lot when I have to do something I don't really want to do, like speeches.

Practicing your speech a lot can really help too, because you already know pretty much exactly what you're going to say so you'll feel more prepared and ready for it.

Right before you start your speech, take a deep breath and remember that everyone else is probably really nervous too when they have to present, so they aren't really judging you as harshly as you may think. And if you're reading off of note cards or a piece of paper, write little positive messages to yourself, it can really help.

I get really nervous in public speaking too, and these things usually help me quite a bit, so I hope they can help you too.
Good luck, you got this!~

I was in a public speaking class last semester, and trust me, it does get scary sometimes. But what I do is just take deep breaths, try to calm my mind and tell myself over and over again that whatever I'm worried about is silly and there's no use in worrying at all.
Next, try this little trick I also use, which helps a lot: If you have trouble with the audience staring back at you and get nervous about that, there's a way to not look at them at all and still make it look like you're keeping eye contact with them, which is an important thing in speaking. Choose some spots on the wall just above the students' heads and look at that, and not at the people themselves, it works wonders. It'll still look like you're looking at them, but instead you are avoiding that awkward 'they're staring at me!' moment.
Hope this helps. smilie

i had to do public speaking in college for some ungodly reason, i found it helped a lot to be really prepared to give my speech. practice at home and know the material well. it also helps to pick a topic you actually care / know about but i don't know if that's under your control

Cheers guys, I'll take this advice into account when preparing to retry my solo talk! Oh, and does having a Powerpoint of your talk behind you help too, as all my previous talks had one to go with it.

It depends on the teacher, because some prefer no powerpoints because it's "too distracting" or whatever. But having a visual aid can help, and if your previous speeches had powerpoints then there's no harm in using one again.
