The ending was left a bit ambigous because that Dawn of the Dragon was the final step of the Legend of Spyro trilogy, designed as Spyro's potential swan song.

What it means is that if people hated the trilogy's guts and didn't buy them enough, the ending would be sufficiently convincing as a final death for Spyro (and by extension, the franchise).

But since they also wanted to continue the franchise if the reboot was successful in bringing back fans, they also needed a window of opportunity... hence the special cutscene at the end.

This way, if the trilogy didn't catch on, Spyro is dead. If the trilogy catch on, he isn't.

... and well, despite all of its flaws and differences, the trilogy was successful in bringing Spyro back to the spotlight, making the happening of a continuation imminent.

In short, good news! The special ending wasn't a dream sequence! Spyro (and by extension the serie) ain't dead yet!
