What the heck an amiibo is

An amiibo is some stupid piece of plastic people scalp and sell for hundreds of dollars on eBay and some people are so desperate they don't have their precious piece of plastic, they make a stupid move and buy it off eBay.

Death for wallets.

But...why? What is the purpose?

The purpose is for you to buy it and put the piece of plastic on the wii u controller and you don't even play it you put it on once and boom your done.

They are NFC figures similar to Skylanders, except they are useful across multiple game franchises rather than just one (e.g. the Sonic, Pac-Man, and Mega Man ones debuted with Smash, but also work with Hyrule Warriors, Mario Kart 8, and more games).

Their purpose is different in each game, some involving putting that character into your game (Smash, Mario Party 10, Codename STEAM), and others are just small bonuses that you get, usually related to that character (e.g. scanning a Sonic Amiibo into Mario Kart 8 gets you a Sonic Racing Suit for your Mii).

They also double as low cost, well made display figures of Nintendo characters, some of which never get merchandise (how often do you find a Captain Falcon figure? Amiibos are the first time he's had one). Also the Smash Bros line in particular is special because the Amiibo figure poses are identical to the in-game trophy poses, which a lot of people find to be a neat touch:

Honestly, I just think they're a waste of money.

Also the other thing about them is that unlike other NFC figures, Amiibos are not required to play they games they work for. You can play as Mario in Smash Bros just fine without a Mario Amiibo. It's just for getting certain uses. In Smash Bros, scanning a Mario Amiibo allows you to train him up and pit him against yourself or your other Amiibos, or your friends and their Amiibos. It's possible to learn things from Amiibo players too.

So they have a use besides being decorations, who knew?

I just thought they were another Nintendo fad.
