Skylanders vs. Infinity vs. Lego Dimensions...let's have a discussion. [CLOSED]

So now that the trailers officially out we can officially talk about it.

Copied from another thread but expanded upon:

Here are somehighlights I picked out of the GameInformer ( http://www.gameinformer.com/b/...campaign=buffer ) article:

Disney Infinity 3.0 isn’t just tossing in a wookiee and a few new playsets and calling it a day, either. Avalanche has reexamined fundamental parts of its core game and is working with best-in-class developers to ensure that Infinity is as good as it can be. Ninja Theory has retuned melee combat, adjusting the timing and adding depth for advanced players. After all, you want to feel powerful when you’re wielding a light saber. Sumo Digital (Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing) has taken Infinity’s driving gameplay to the shop, tweaking the handling and drifting to provide a smoother experience. That’s key, considering one of the new Toy Box games is a kart racer. Those tweaks carry over into the Toy Box, which means legacy characters like Hulk and Mr. Incredible benefit as well.

Another Star Wars playset is coming this winter based on Star Wars: The Force Awakens. There are also sets based on Pixar’s Inside Out – with figures based on Joy, Disgust, Anger, Fear, and Sadness – and one from United Front Games (Sleeping Dogs) focused on Marvel characters including Hulkbuster Iron Man, Ultron, and more. Additional figures for Disney Infinity 3.0 include Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Sam Flynn and Quorra from Tron: Legacy, Mulan, Olaf, and more. The Toy Box is getting special attention, too, with the addition of an updated hub world, toys for new players and experts, and the addition of an all-new farming system. May the pitchforks be with you.

We’ve got the behind-the-scenes story on every facet of the game’s development, and you’re only going to read about it in Game Informer’s June issue. Disney Infinity 3.0 is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Wii U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, iOS, and Android this fall. The Starter Pack is priced at $64.99. A new batch of Power Discs are also coming, with a twist: They won't be in blind bags anymore. You can see what you're getting before you buy them.

No more blind bags, tweaked and enhanced gameplay, new gaming systems like refined racing and, if the trailers are any indication, space combat!!!! Crap just got real. They could have just copy and pasted 2.0 with Star Wars and sold millions yet they further refined it and added more. Skylanders needs to step it up this time around...now more than ever. They aren't just refining the game but how we purchase products. I have to wonder if Activision and how Traps were sold had any impact on this. Granted Infinity Discs function differently than Traps but both are collectible and extra peripherals that are less than the figures and enhance the game play experience while needing to be purchased by the score to truly be enjoyed. Lego will have the most additional purchases to buy buy they also function with pre-exhisting Legos so there's that. Plus Lego is letting us mix well established franchises which doesn't appear to be the case with Infinity 3.0...STILL!!!! That's the purpose of this thread to see what the three franchises can steal/learn from each other and how it will affect us, the consumers. That's why I believe it's relevant in the Skylanders section to see how we feel about the changes and improvements others are making. I have faith in V.V. but I need to see more this time around and not less.

Honestly, the only thing Skylanders really needs is a good stat editor, like in Kamen Rider SummonRide, where you can basically make any character how you want. The upgrade paths doesn't work that well anymore, especially when you can fully upgrade them in one day.

Just something to make characters feel fully customizable.

I'd like to see them add the same functionality that Series XYZ Skylanders have in that they can change specs. I would also like to see some kind of innovation in the progression of the Skylanders. We lost Heroics and anything that adds global stats. Hat's just don't do it any more. They added accessories but they're aesthetic only and don't do anything.

Amen. This is just going to be pure speculation and (currently) unfounded opinions in regard to Infinity 3.0 and Lego Dimensions. A conversation like this is best had once all players have come to the table versus what is essentially "Skylanders versus two things that nobody actually has any experience with."

Sounds like they're putting more effort into 3.0. Still unsure if I'll get it though. 2.0 ran kinda like **** on the Wii U last time I played it, so I might have to make more space on the system. LEGO Dimensions on the other hand is a sure-fire Christmas gift for me.

You may be the only person in this thread who doesn't realize exactly how all of these types of discussions devolve over time. The original "What we know" Trap Team post ended up locked because it started out as specifically what information we had or had found out then went to "Wow, wouldn't this be cool" (akin to discussing improvements and such) and then totally exploded into a flame war, to the point at which the mods toasted the whole thread and locked it. Some of us have no interest in another such situation.

Except that we can base the discussion off of what we know at this point. Ironically we know some things about D.I. 3.0 and L.D. but we don't know anything about Sky 5. That's why it's a discussion. There are so many other threads about for more speculative subjects. I figured we'd discuss what each franchise might/will do regarding product releases, game play changes, etc. Will Skylanders ever evolve? Will Lego hold everyone's attention and how many franchises will they tap? Will D.I. have better story based play sets? Will Skylanders ever add online? It's the questions at this point that are interesting to me. Will some people be leaving Skylands if nothing new, feature wise, is announced? Is a franchise's branding enough to stay your purchase? These questions and more are the purpose of this thread. This community has demonstrated on many occasions that it can remain civil. I continue to have that faith now.

Time will tell. I hope they have a serious Ace up their sleeve...they're gonna need it. I just hope they don't rest on their laurels so to speak and choose to slap a 5 on the box. I'm thinking and hoping it will be something fun and inventive because based on what little I've seen Lego and D.I. have blown me away...I'm still waiting on Skylanders to show up.

They still don't have cross play with players. Whatever.

As someone who hasn't played any of these games and just observes them for now, Disney Infinity has always looked like the best in terms of what looks most fun to me (not counting LEGO Dimensions here, not enough is known about it). However, it also has the least attractive pay wall. Though Skylanders doesn't fare too much better in that regard either, and it definitely does not interest me as a game. I'll probably play through one of the games one day and that will be it.

According to a recent interview, 3.0 is adding a lot of new or revamped things to the franchise. Meanwhile, Skylanders isn't introducing anything new besides new Skylanders and Gimmicks that are only wasting programming space. I'd rather have only 8 new Skylanders, no backwards compatibility, and 4× as much content in the game itself than 32 new Skylanders, backwards compatibility, and a game that gets worse every year. IMO, Skylanders is getting worse every year, and Disney Infinity is getting better every year.

I posted this somewhere else, but I think I should post it here too.

I get what your saying about content but losing backwards compatibility isn't a viable option any more...especially since their competition is still supporting it. Plus the second that goes away, I'm out. Part of the appeal of the backwards compatibility is that I can purchase a figure and kn ow it will work now and in the future. Even if I don't like the current game I have the knowledge that I can try again in the next installment with Skylanders I have an interest in now. It also add consumer confidence in that I'm investing and not just spending money on something that will be outdated in a year.

You're right that does say it all. It says that they are simply adding Star Wars content to the game, and probably really not focusing on much else.

Disney Infinity will only truly be good when they completely remove the Toy Box mode and just make it a big crossover thing. Of course, Lego Dimensions is already doing that, and before the game even hits shelves, and Skylanders already beats it in terms of character design, the world, story, and overall gameplay.

Disney Infinity has always been bad, and I have no idea why everyone here loves it so much.

They are actually doing quite a bit this time around. They've assigned the different play sets to different developers to hopefully provide a better experience than past efforts. They've added a legit cart racing mini game disc for the toy box along with another mode. The Star Wars play sets seem to have both ground vehicle, space vehicle and melee combat this time around. The fact that any Star Wars character will work in any Star Wars play set is awesome. The discs will no longer come in blind bags and we will know what we're getting this time around (huge plus). The starter dropped $10 and the software will be offered separately and will not require a new portal. For me that's a plus since I have 2 PS4's and won't need 2 starters just to discs. Although it might end up being worth it to just get a second starter if the disc is more than $40. So far they've made the claims to improve. Plus they will never get rid of the Toy Box feature. While not important to you it's been the best feature so far in my house. I personally enjoy building the worlds that my daughter can play in. So that's a vital feature for us but it's an "Eye of the Beholder" type thing so there you go. I believe the play sets will be better this time around. Time will tell though.
