I felt like I've been falling out with 16-bit JRPGs in general, mainly because I was too young at the time, and the games I did play (or at least knew about) from the PS1-era and beyond are spat on by those most dominant on the internet.
I'm not looking to change opinions but I do ask for those who knew about the "Golden Age" of JRPGs to take up more responsibility when trying to get others to play the games YOU grew up with. Just don't go trashing the games others grew up with afterwards, especially if these games made significant impacts to the game industry and made your JRPGs more noticeable. If Final Fantasy VII wasn't the mega-hit you didn't want it to be, then less people less likely be bothered with checking the games that came before, which includes VI.
Look, I don't think old-school JRPGs fans are the big jerks I saw back all those years ago, especially with MOBA-genre, especially League of Legends, having toxic communities full of bad people who throw fits over nothing. That said, it's not wise to be mean-spirited and bitter towards the likes of Final Fantasy VII, Kingdom Hearts (Yes, that counts too) or Tales of Symphonia for not being like Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger or Earthbound, otherwise younger gamers will look to tear your games apart just to give you a taste of your own medicine. At least the Suikoden fans are much more humble because they just talk about the games they love. I'm not sure how their perceptions would change if that series started on SNES as oppose to the PS1.
Your games will always be awesome to you but the games you don't like haven't away the games you grew up with. Just don't be dicks to those who get the same experience as you when they're playing a JRPG with 3D graphics, voice-acting and bit of people flying around and clashing swords in the air. I'm just saying.
Update: Many of you would say VII had more exposure than VI, to the point that VII fans refuse to play anything before and maybe after, which I do think is pretty ignorant. In this decade however, after XIII's reception in the age of the internet, I feel like it's been inverted. Final Fantasy VI is now the most popular game in the series when you see top ten lists, internet personalities gushing over the game and indie devs being inspired by VI, Earthbound, etc.
