Come on, you video game creators. This is Spyro's fifth game. He's old enough now to be able to fly any ol' time he feels like it!
Why don't they give Spyro a permanent flying ability? That would be bloody AWESOME! I guess that they're worried about things becoming too easy... you could just fly to reach things! However, that detail is an easy one to solve. They could just make a game that has nothing to do with reaching places or objects in order to make progress!
Spyro should have listened to Moneybags and went to buy flying lessons...

How can anyone be afraid of flying, excepting when you're in a flying metal time bomb with wings? If you've got your own ability to fly, I think it's pointless to be afraid of it. (Personally, I love heights)

It would make the games too easy. Sure, they could make the games to have, as you said, nothing to do with reaching places to continue, but how would that work? I just don't think it would be fun at all =(

'course, it's kinda odd if you noticed in cutscenes in the earlier games like Ripto's Rage you see Spyro flying. But then, the Spyro series really isn't supposed to make sense.

To answer this topic...

The general consensus is that Spyro sucks at flying. He's generally bad at taking off and considering his skills at landing, it's more like "crashing". As a general rule, unless through special conditions (flight corridors), Spyro couldn't fly to save his life (quite literally ; miss jump, Spyro go splat).

That and it would make the games too easy, if you want the boring, flat out truth.

be a spyro game that when you have
finished the game and have 100%
then they should make him fly.
Are you wondering why does when
ever spyro enter a flying portals he
flys and you have to beat the time trail
well thats becuase zoe the fairy gives
his wing power to fly for a short time.

If you look at his wings they seem kind of small to allow flight.

I don't think it would make things too easy, just modify it so he can only fly for a limited amount of time and then he needs to land (a souped up glide if you will) or make some areas in which he can't fly (wind turbulence, perhaps?)

Aeravys, I'm with you on the statement that the Spyro series isn't supposed to make sense. (Spyro on 2 legs at the end of the first game and he's a quadruped in basically the entire series.)

well he can....but it would be a cheat i magine flying all over the level you could skip through it! wouldnt be fun...

Hm...now that you think about it, I think I'd be afraid of flying, too. O.o I always though flying would be cool, but now I that I think about it, I am way too afraid of heights to actually go really high. >.>

Wow!!!Spyro still can't fly!!

I think it really sucks that there's some device or ability that lets you fly in every other Spyro game I playd and on this one you can't fly!

spyro should be anable to fly now! i mean, like he's old eough! or maybe they didn't want it to be to easy, u could easily fly over obitcals. but yeah it would be fun as! i think he can fly, but not when ur playing as him, or it would be to easy.

Yeah, like in ANB there was flying levels. I agree with SequioaDragon though, flying in a free-roam area would make it too easy to get the DarkGems, DragonEggs, LightGems, etc. But free-roam and flying seem to be the case in DotD.

Oh well. But on YOTD, GWTG, STD and ETD Spyro could fly when he was going to a different level. So, I think Skyqueen is right. He can fly, but they didn't want to make it to easy for the gamers.

Yep, you can do a swim-in-air glitch which is kinda like flying.

Yeah it is, but you can't breathe fire or anything but charge. Also, you can't run/walk on the ground as well.

There are ways to make a flying system which is just as fun as free flight but with limits... like in The Unbeatable Spyro(in my signature) there are magic flight feathers you can find or buy which when gathered, give Spyro an energy which allows him to fly anywhere for as long as that magic lasts. The more feathers he collects, the longer he can fly. But the feather-energy does not get used up as long as Spyro is on the ground.

I always wanted Spyro to fly because flying is awesome

At least he can fly in DotD

Anyway, Somewhere near the end of The Unbeatable Spyro, Spyro will probably find an ultimate phoenix feather or something that will allow him permanent flight. I think that would be a cool way to do that.

in DOTD and GTG you fly long but in gtg when you take off X you'll still be flying!

well this spyro game didn't really have to much things that made it special just you can hurt bankerdude ( moneybags) and flame and ember skins..i didn't really like spyro that much in this game..

spyro is young dragon.all grown-up dragons can fly. a heros tail intro red is flying.a dawn of the dragon he can fly,because hes is teen now.

Flying would have destroyed this game. It's a platformer, if you're given the ability to go anywhere at the start what fun is it just to fly to everything? The gameplay here is that you're supposed to find ways to jump/glide to what you need, not fly straight to it.
