Y O U D I E D Welcome to the long awaited FromSoftware General. In case you haven't played a FromSoft title, keep reading. Who are FromSoftware?: FromSoftware is a video game developer currently owned by Kadokawa. They created the King's Field, Tenchu, and Armored Core series. However, they are recognized today for their creation of Demon's Souls, Dark Souls (series), and upcoming successor, Bloodborne. Innovation, why are these games loved and why?: Demon's Souls (DeS), Dark Souls series (DaS+DaSII), and Bloodborne (BlB) are well known and enjoyed by many due to the challenging gameplay, well thought out puzzles + traps, world geography, game design, and lore. Demon's Souls, which was already incredibly well received (especially for being the first in the series) had players jaws drop and wanting more. It was the first game to create such a fleshed out world atmosphere and design. Every moment was eerie and lonesome. Not to mention, combat was not just normal A/RPG mechanics. Everything had weight to it, and the enemies were actually to be feared. The same caries over to Dark Souls, but that took all of the world geography and made everything interconnected, allowing secrets and shortcuts to be found. Every location had been thought out. Bloodborne (upcoming) takes a few of these mechanics and spices them up, follow that games section for more details. Cool! How do I play these games?: Demon's Souls is owned by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), and releases for PS3. This title is exclusive to the PS3 and is not on PSNow, nor remastered. The only method to play to play this game is through the PS3. Dark Souls released for the PS3, 360, and PC. It is not on PSNow, nor remastered for current gen consoles. Dark Souls II released for the PS3, 360, and PC. However, it is receiving a current gen remaster for the PS4, Xbone, and PC (DirectX 11). The latest game, Bloodborne, is exclusively being released on the PS4. The same exact formula follows ala Demon's Souls. Sony owns 100% rights. The Games, from newest to oldest: What is Bloodborne?: Set in a Victorian-gothic setting, Bloodborne takes players through the quest in search for answers in an ancient city of Yharnam, which has recently been cursed with an atypical plague. Bloodborne takes the world structure of Demon's Souls Nexus and Dark Souls interconnected world geography and combines the two. Every bit of world design is detailed and vast like Dark Souls, but their is a Nexus hub similar to the Firelink Shrine, which is seperated from that vast world the players embark on. The game is also the first "souls-esque" game that changes the core combat mechanics of the previous games. The core combat mechanics that have been changed are not for the easier casual player in mind, as things have become much more challenging. In Bloodborne, the player is faced with no Shield, a limited default health potion, and strafes, dashes and side-dodges have been replaced where a shield would be used. The combat is also faster, and weapons have more than the standard x,y,z combo. Weapons may now transform! Instead of an x,y,z combo, you may transfer the weapon mid combo and perform x,y,trigger,a,b,c. Although, since weapons do transform this time around, there will be less tools to the players disposal. Strafes, dodges, and rolls and dashes? No shield? Why?: The game was designed to be more offensive than defensive in regards to combat. The feeling of success and reward is highly present whenever you defeat a hard enemy or challenge. The sense of reward is designed to feel the highest in the series. This means, enemies are faster, hit harder, and can track you down. Enemies won't even be static this time around! They may wonder around, sense you, and locate you. There is a sense of "being hunted" or "terminated" implemented as well. However, since the player and enemies can move faster, hit harder, and change mid-combo, this also means a feature was implemented in order to not be so brutal. The regain feature. The regain feature? How does it work? Why?: The regain feature depends on how fast you hit, if you decide to hit, and the amount of time you hit. You cannot hit ground, it must be an enemy. If you do that successfully in a period of time (less than a second), the player will regain some health from the hit you took. it will not be the full amount of health the player lost, unless you successfully hit a chain combo. Now, don't assume this is cheap or a way to please the casual crowd. Enemies and bosses can use the regain technique as well! And since enemies are generally faster than the player...beware. It's a real nightmare. Is there a soul mechanic in Bloodborne?: Presumably, yes? Not much has been shown. Most people are assuming it has to relate with the blood your character becomes drenched with. FromSoftware likes to show as little as possible. Did I see guns? How do they work?: Yes, there are guns this time around. However, they do little to minimal damage and can only reach a certain distance. Think of the guns as a tool to defend yourself. There is a limited ammo counter of 20. Guns work as your tool to parry. Instead of an easy shield block+riposte, you must pull the trigger and use one of your ammo pieces as soon as the enemy is going to strike you. Then, you must walk/run over and attack. This was designed to limit the use of parrying, and make it a little harder for players. If Parrying has been designed to be less cheap, what about back stabs?: Back stabs now require to be charged up behind the enemy and released to function. If parrying and backstabbing are in and designed to be harder for the player...does that mean PvP is still around?: Yes, PvP is still a feature. Not much details have been said, other than connection between players and friends may be separated. The player may leave special notes for friends to discover so they may join in their duel, or co-operative play. Co-operative play is back too?: Yes, although not much has been said regarding that. It's probably the same as it was in the past three titles. Okay, what about armor?: Yes, armor is still in the game, sort of. No tanks or heavy armor was designed for the game based on the setting. Gotta love those trench coats. In addition to this, you still create a character with a pre-set class. Very little has been shown regarding that, but it is a confirmed feature. Why is the setting no longer medieval-fantasy?: The game takes place in a Victorian setting, possibly around the 1800's. However, tiny forms of magic are still around, such as weapon enchants (limited), and arcane power. Unfortunately, there is no more reason as to why the setting is different rather than Sony and Hidetaka Miyazaki wanting to seperate from the Souls games and create a first party Souls-esque title, aka Demon's Souls, Sony's property that started the series. Why isn't this called Demon's Souls 2?: No reason has been given, but everybody assumes that Sony would receive copyright similarity strikes from Namco-Bandai, the developers of Dark Souls (came after Demon's). However, this game is very much a spiritual successor to Demon's Souls. |

Why is FromSoftware back in bed with Sony?:
Demon's Souls would have more than likely become a series with numbered sequels if it were not for Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) deciding not to publish their own first party title in the west. There are several reasons that SCEA decided not to publish the game, such as it being a huge mess, debugging issues, poor framerate, and online interactivity just not working before release. The game was slandered by SCEJ's president as being "absolute crap". However, the game made it to release, working flawlessly and met with universal praise. Sales were unexpectedly high, and was the #1 most imported game for months. This led to Atlus publishing the game in the West, eight months later. it made Platinum status and met high standards universally. Although, because of the slander SCEJ's president made toward the game, and SCEA deciding not to publish in the west, FromSoftware took the money they made from the game and developed a spiritual sequel that would be multi-platform, and published by Namco-Bandai games. Sony saw this as a huge loss as they had been working with FromSoftware since the early PlayStation One days, and even cited "Passing on Demon's Souls was a mistake" Eventually, as one can assume, Sony and FromSoftware made up. As soon as the DLC for Dark Souls (Artorias of the Abyss) came out, Sony and FromSoft started working together again on Bloodborne. Bloodborne and Demon's Souls share the same contract, Sony owns the complete rights, but, will publish in the West this game. In fact, the game has a universal release date this time around. Great, when does it come out?: March 24, 2015. What is Dark Souls II?: Dark Souls II is the sequel to Dark Souls. The game takes place in a different area than the first game did, however, there are similarities. Not much has changed from the first game. Improvements to Dark Souls: If you consider more boss encounters, despawning enemies, and a weapon durability glitch that hasn't been patched out since launch, warping from the start, one designated bonfire that levels the player up, fan-fiction tier lore, music not being memorable like the previous titles, broken world geography, and less interesting NPC's than the first game, you'll love this. The game is still great, but sadly, was sort of a disappointment coming from Demon's Souls and Dark Souls fans. Wait, what do you mean by broken world geography?: The world isn't as interconnected as Dark Souls. It doesn't make sense, at all actually. B-b-but, you mentioned before that you hit NG+++++! You must have enjoyed it!: The game is not bad, in fact, its pretty great. It was just a let down from the first two titles. Criticism: The game was still received very high reviews, but hardcore players still felt disappointed. Soul Memory comes to mind. |

Soul Memory?:
Soul Memory distances the player from connecting to other players for co-op and pvp. Not only this time is the players online interactivity based off of Soul Level, but the ranged amount of souls the players have carried too. This also applies to lost souls. Many fans and players critiqued the game negatively for this, claiming that it hindered their online experiences. Did FromSoft listen to the criticism of Soul Memory?: Yes, and it was patched too late. Take note, Bloodborne does not have Soul Memory. They definitely listened. ...WTF? The game looks incredibly downgraded from its reveal!: Yup, tons of the assets and the brand new lighting system were scrapped. It was a huge bummer. ...I heard that Dark Souls II was being remastered for the PS4, XBone, and PC (DirectX 11)...is that true?: Yes. it's called Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin. Comes out two weeks after Bloodborne. Will the remaster have the awesome assets and lighting system?: Nope. It does however run at a 1080/60 for the PS4. Oh...nice?: Oh...is right. Dark Souls II is a good game, but a mighty disappointment. Play for it yourself and see. What are the reasons for the game not being as well received as DeS and DaS?: An entirely different team worked on the game, including two different directors. Refer to them as the B-Team at FromSoftware. More on that will be included in the F.A.Q. |

What is Dark Souls?: Dark Souls is the spiritual successor to Demon's Souls. Set in the fictional world of Lordran, Dark Souls' plot and world setting are loose and their is hardly a narrative. This is similar to Demon's Souls, but given from item descriptions and tales from the NPC's...the world and plot is designed to make the player think. No set up is really given. Dark Souls also takes the combat from Demon's Souls, and polishes it up. The way the player, NPC's, enemies and bosses attack are designed to make the player think as it is quite challenging the first time through. Combat is meant to be played defensively and with a sense of tactics. A person cannot just run up to a few enemies and proceed to swing their weapon and expect great results. More times than often, the person will receive tons of damage or die. This was design taken from Demon's Souls to achieve the sense of reward achieved from bosses, enemies, and traps. This time around, the hub like world is no longer a Nexus that allows the player to teleport. Every bit of the world is interconnected which allows short cuts and secrets back to the Firelink Shrine (the hub of the game). This creates a sense of adventure and enjoyment from the player. Firelink Shrine (the hub), once again is vital to the player and they will be visiting very often. Dark Souls takes nearly every feature (but World Tendency) and expands upon it. Souls still work like they should, and so does everything else. Wow, so are the core mechanics exactly the same? Besides being polished.: Yes, that includes parrying+riposting, back stabs, and enchantments. Every bit of attack and animation has a certain weight to them and feels fantastic. The only thing that has been changed regarding mechanics are sex-based armor, and world design. There is no longer armor exclusive to males or females. Also, bonfires, and the Estus Flask are introduced. We'll get to that later. You keep mentioning the world design. Is it that good?: Yes, the world design blew players minds when it came out. There had not been an interconnected Three-Dimensional game out yet. Everything was connected, it was a seamless world. It allowed shortcuts that made sense and secrets that put a smile on people's faces as they discovered them. Most beginning players are shocked when they find how to get back to the Undead asylum from Firelink, or from Firelink back to the undead burg from that elevator. It makes more sense played, than told. Do weapons work the same? What about enchantments and upgrades?: Yes, weapons work the same. They still break after use and need to be repaired. Enchantments are a different ball game though. Sticky White Stuff is no longer a thing, Curse Weapon, Light Weapon, and Magic Weapon are gone. Every bit of enchantment for Dark Souls still applies to the Magic (now Intelligence) level. This includes many magic enchantments, that require a higher level. However, Dark Souls reintroduces Faith from the previous game. Faith, while it does apply to healing spells still, now contains three types of lightning spears, visibility, and one weapon enchant. The weapon enchant is called the Sunlight Blade. It scales with your faith level, and has three levels within its covenant to get the best multiplier that affects the damage output when applied to the blade. Weapon upgrades are similar to those in Demon's Souls. The blades/fragments needed to upgrade the weapon are renamed but work as the same function. There are several blacksmiths this time around, a few that have a certain specialty in forging weapons to certain elements. Weapons may be forged into ultimate weapons for those who desire not to give into Souls... I loved Demon's Souls, but each time I died I was respawned to the start. If the world is interconnected and I die in some area long from the Firelink Shrine, do I start over there again...?: Great question! In fact, you do not! This game introduces bonfires. Think of these as a checkpoint. They are limited, so don't become cocky and think that you can breeze through a segment in the game that you are unfamiliar with. Use the bonfire whenever you can! Bonfire's allow the player to level up, attune magic (place what magic spells you want in your inventory), store items in the bottomless box (think treasure chests that hold items you don't want in your inventory screen), and many more. For people that have not played the game, the additional features than are unlockable will not be spoiled. What's the Estus Flask?: The Estus Flask is the item that replaces the grass from Demon's Souls. It's used to your disposal as a method of healing. This time around, it is incredibly limited and requires rare items known as Estus Flask Shards to upgrade the Estus Flask. It restores a light amount of HP depending on what level the Estus Flask is. When did the game come out?: October 4, 2011. One DLC expansion came out named Artorias of the Abyss. That came out October 23, 2012. It features scrapped content. |

What is Demon's Souls?: Demon's Souls is a game developed in collaboration with FromSoftware and SCEJ. Initially started off as an Oblivion wannabe for PlayStation, FromSoftware wanted differently. They wanted to expand their King's Field games, but bring it to the third dimension (point of view). This, unfortunately, made development for the title to be a little slower than anticipated. The director Hidetaka Miyazaki had different intentions. The game would be designed for hardcore A/RPG fans. It was designed to punish the player based on their actions and created the sense of reward found in later titles as well. Combat was designed to be separate from the vast majority of game titles that require you to mash a button to perform a cool set of moves. Each weapon variety had a different set of attacks from the others. All of them had a sense of weight to them, and each weapon type had more than one way of hitting enemies (also carried in DaS+DaSII, and now expanded upon in BlB). The player could only carry a set of two weapons, two shields/magic cata/staff, four pieces of armor, and expendable items. The more armor you put on, the heavier and slower the player would roll (although depending on what stats you level up, this can change). Each stat had their own attributes, and a player could completely design their character however they wanted (which also means if you chose the wrong starting class!). Enemies are to be feared. Always. The player has a mind, why not the enemies and bosses? Enemies can see you, hunt you, and kill you. Easily. The player cannot rush in and expect good results. Expect souls. Expect tons of souls. Expect to lose them. The game's core mechanics sound neat, how's the level design?: The level design is very unique. There are settings that are meant to creep and disturb the player. Every level has four parts, each ending with a well designed boss. There are countless traps, well thought out enemy placement, and intriguing short cuts that make the player go "ahh!" in excitement. Also, the game's hub world is called "The Nexus". It holds those who help the player, betray the player, blacksmiths, enchanters, and portals to other worlds. If the games enemies and bosses are hard...what about healing? How does that work?: The first game of the series is bound to have some flaws...healing is sort of broken. There are multiple types of grass, and each give a different amount of boost to your the health your player has lost. Most are rare, such as the Dark Moon Grass! ...But, all of this is easily exploitable and was never patched out. Yes, the player, if they decide to be cheap and break the game....can duplicate any item in their inventory. Why this didn't get patched out is beyond me. It doesn't help that the player can hold 99 of each grass in their stock while adventuring around. Although, once again, this can be avoided if the person playing decides to play how the game is intended. Well, that's nice. There are swords, axes, and clubs. What about Magic?: Err...yes, there is magic. Yes, its broken too. Unfortunately. Magic would not be broken if there were no duplication glitch and the item to refill the magic meter were very limited. Don't recommend first time players to start as a Magician or Royalty class. It sort of breaks the fundamentals and functionality of the game...a game designed to be challenging. You mentioned earlier that the game has innovative features, didn't you? Tell me about that: You capture demon's souls. The player is meant to take those demon's souls and use them as an expense to items they want to purchase...AND as their experience points. Yup, the game combines the too! It actually works out very well, and is carried to the later games as well. However...if the soul seeker decides to become too cocky and falls...there is a very punishing outcome. What outcome is that?: If the player dies, they have to reach the spot where they died in order to regain their souls. They player also happens to become dead. Now, however, if the player happens to die once again before they can reach where their lost soul is...they lose all their souls. All their souls. All. Their. Souls. There are also no checkpoints, but the world design is short and simple if you know what you are doing. Although, its still very challenging. Beware! INVASION: Based on whether or not the player is in soul form, they can invade others games! Yes, this is true. You can murder the other player for souls, to become human again, etc. Very unique feature that was praised. It sounds silly on paper, but don't knock it until you try it. Also carries over to the later titles. PvP: Player vs Player is part of invading. Lots of fun. Experience for yourself. When did Demon's Souls come out?: October 6, 2009. |

Frequently Asked Questions...: Are these games as challenging as advertised?: Yes. Indeed they are. How long do these games take to complete?: Depends on the player. Some people range get 60-80 hours on their first playthrough. Tons of hardcore players/devoted FromSoft fans can beat the games in under a few hours! It really depends on how seasoned you are. How much replayability is there with these titles?: I've achieved over six hundred hours in Dark Souls alone. 250+ in Dark Souls II. 300+ in Demon's Souls. I expect several hundred from Bloodborne, especially from the Chalice Dungeons. Chalice Dungeons?: Chalice Dungeons are exclusive to Bloodborne and totally optional. It is a three level layered dungeon that changes each time you visit (although after completion can be changed to static if the player chooses so). They can be shared with friends too! In fact, you get a greater reward if you defeat them by yourself. The bosses happen to be randomized as well. What is the preferred order to play these titles?: DeS --> DaS --> DaSII --> BlB What is the soon to be preferred order to play these titles?: Des --> DaS --> BlB A-Team + Miyazaki is all you need, baby. What are these teams?: Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne are being developed by the same glorious director, Hidetaka Miyazaki. Mr.Miyazaki happens to have a group of lead programmers, artists, level designers and etc he sticks with when directing games. These same people were used to design DeS, DaS, and BlB. An entirely different staff and director worked on DaSII, which explains its...flaws. Here is a link to prove that. The team working on DeS + DaS went to work on Bloodborne while the B-Team worked on DaSII. Should I play these games?: ABSOLUTELY! Would you introduce Dark Souls II to first time players first if that's all you got?: Absolutely not, it may sour the experience that the player could have. The A-Team is all you need, baby. DeS --> DaS --> BlB ...Joking aside, do play DaSII if you want. It's not an awful game, but a disappointing one. It doesn't touch the leagues of God Tier status that DeS + DaS + BlB (God knows BlB will be excellent). What about FromSoft's other titles? Why were they not mentioned?: Unfortunately, there isn't really a community for them. Although, this is the place to talk about them if you must! How much time did this take you?: I started it a while ago, but didn't get far with it. I didn't feel as if it was appropriate to make a topic so early, especially since the game got pushed back nearly two months away. The game was set to launch today originally, so I thought why not finish this up? This project took a little less than half my day with breaks, obviously. I enjoyed making it, and I'll probably make more if people want me to. What if I have more questions?: Feel free to ask! |

Thank you! I put a lot of time into it. I don't feel like its perfect. I'm adding a few image links that'll jump to reviews and game play right now, it still isn't finished. As nooby as the header banners are, I am proud of them haha. Yes yes yes! I'll use one or two gif's per game, and the rest will be links. (: And damn, son. You should really play Demon's Souls. It has a fantastic score and ahhh. I love Demon's Souls. Dark Souls is definitely more polished, however. |

Thanks! It's all good. I was surprised when I saw your comment and switched over to Firefox, it was having issues too. I may pull down one or two more GIF's though, just in case someone who stumbles upon the thread is running an ancient PC haha. The games really are not connected to each other, besdies DaS + DaSII having some connections...but yes. Start from the beginning. It's hard for some people to play through DaS then go back to DeS. As for reviews...? Maybe. I actually have a really nice microphone I purchased in September for skype calls with my close friends, perhaps it'll see more use now. I absolutely wanted to do some build walkthroughs for DeS and DaS...but the problem is that recording gameplay off of the PS3 is a huge hassle. I've been debating it though. I absolutely love these games with a...weird passion. I'm definitely, definitely, definitely going to be streaming Bloodborne after I beat it. I don't want other people to spoil me what goes on when I'm playing it for the first time. Also, if you have Demon's Souls...hit me up. I'd love to play some co-op with people. I can totally give you some good advice regarding weapon and stats to level up. Edit: Tl;dr: yes I intend to do so. Only problem would be capturing Demon's Souls. Edit 2: Each game has one gif present, besides Bloodborne (since its the latest game in the series). |

Thanks guys. ^_^
I'm thinking of redoing my Dark Souls 2 bit, it sounds way too subjective where I could have honestly put Kore game info in.I'm also goijgnto have to edit the bloodborne content and put reviews in. |

Kind of. I expect a delay for sure.
It has a two year exact Dev time. Bloodborne sat in the oven since 2012 and just came out. |
