The rules haven't been updated in ages, but they need to be. And this is the second time the password thing has happened.

Seriously though, would you want someone going into your personal information 24/7? Passwords give the "okay" to go into someone else's account. Plus, if you give someone your password, they can be total jerkweeds and change the password to something you'll never guess, so they, in turn, get to use your account forever, and lock you out forever.

If someone posts their account passwords on here publically, it's viewable to all, even to guests. If you posted your password with no regard for your online safety, imagine an unregistered user logging into your account on their side and logging you out, changing your original password, email address, etc. on your account.

No, I don't want someone going into my account - which is why I'm not stupid enough to post my password.

However, if someone is stupid enough to post the password to their account, then they deserve to lose the account.

So, what's the downside?

I think in general a "Don't post personal information" rule would be handy. We shouldn't just stop people from posting their passwords, but also their exact addresses, real names, and other information that could be harmful if posted in the public.

So.. let me ask this... What's wrong with someone posting his/her own password?

Basically what everyone above said holds true and is the major reason(s) why you shouldn't post your password. But along with that, it also technically breaks the "don't be more than one person" rule that already exists on the forum, as other people who get that password would be acting as that person by using their account.

So, we'd get to get rid of a forum member stupid enough to post his/her own password *and* a forum member jerkish enough to use it. Again, what is the downside?

Fair enough of a point but at the same time the rule should be established to prevent people from doing so in the first place.

What you're suggesting is akin to not having a "no porn" rule, so that we can weed out anyone who is dumb enough to post porn in the first place. Yeah you might be getting rid of those people but you're also allowing it to happen in the first place and therefore cause a form of damage.

So, there's this bridge in a town nearby. It used to be for vehicle traffic, but it was pretty ran down and not reall used - so they closed the bridge and the road leading up to it. A few years later, they turned the bridge and the area around it into a nice little park. They did some remodeling of the bridge, painting it, repaving it, etc. Nice little area now.

They hung a sign on the bridge that says "No jumping off bridge". I have a photo of this and if I wasn't on my cell, I'd post it. Why do I have a photo of it? Because it amuses me. If someone was going to jump off the bridge, is this sign going to somehow stop them? Are they supposed to see the sign, sigh, and go find another bridge to jump off of?

Same thing here. If someone is basically going to commit account suicide, is a rule saying not to post his/her password going to stop him/her?

Not at all. If I were to post porn, without moderator/admin action, there'd really be no consequences to my action.
If I were to post my password, I'm sure I'd be locked out of my account within minutes.

That's the difference - why we need a rule against posting porn - because it's something that the administration has to get involved in. Posting your password lets Darwinism take care of everything.

Also I agree. The rules have aged like milk, it's grossly outdated. There needs to be some updates to them.

You asked a question and got an answer but I agree. Let's move on.

------------------

I still stand that a rule proposing "Don't post personal information" be added. I know that it goes without saying, but the site has a lot of younger users that may not know this, and it stands to reason we should let them know.

Not posting porn and your password should be common ****ing sense. 10 year olds on dS don't have common sense. Thus rules are in place. Me personsally as a moderator of darkSpyro, I'd love the rule.

I mentioned "account suicide" - a commonly used term when someone posts in such a way with his/her account that they intend to lose the account. How is that different than posting your password?

Since you brought it up, can you do somethingas a moderator of DarkSpyro, can you do something about the off-topic posts in this thread? You've commented before about how you dislike derailings. Seems like there's a few posts in this thread that have nothing to do with the proposed change in the rules.
