An interesting perspective. I want to hear your thoughts on this topic and the "didn't age well" excuse.

I really don't understand what this comment is trying to say.

I mean, professional reviewers are never really reviewing old games, so I don't see where it will be applied there.

However, "it didn't age well" is a valid criticism. Why? Because some games age PERFECTLY. Look at the visuals of of TLoZ: The Wind Waker, for example. Or everything about the Classic Sonic games, or something like Mega Man X. Those games feel/look just as good now as they were back when they first came out. "It didn't age well" is not an excuse to criticise, it IS a criticism in and of itself.

When someone asks me on my opinion on an old game, I will look at it just as I will any modern game. At the end of the day, you generally want to play games that are fun to play, and if you ask me for games like that, I am going to suggest those kind of games. I don't care if a game's flaws are the result of it being old, if it's not fun, it just isn't fun. Maybe I would have liked that game 10 years ago, before I was given elevated standards in my gaming taste, but if that game is being presented to me NOW, I will critique it based on what I see NOW.

It's inevitable that, as later installments of a franchise come out, older installments will get compared. Especially if the newer installments bring about welcome changes. Some old games are very easy to pick up and play. But others just don't feel as natural to return to after many years. <.<;

When you back at the PS1 system, the games are all blocky to some degree, but they're still classics. Most games on modern systems are more beautiful but less varied, dumbed down or, at worst, bland, not to mention all the pre-order DLC and unpolished AAA releases of late.

Wanna know why likes of Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, Spyro the Dragon, Silent Hill, and so many other PS1 games are still considered great classics? Not nostalgia but because they do stuff that new games won't do. You want vibrant colourful games? There's very few these days unless you count Bioshock Infinite or Wind Waker HD. Games with cheat codes? HA! Non-human protagonists with personality?

To me, these "badly-aged" games actually look way more beautiful than most modern games, in terms of art direction of art direction over graphical power. Give me Sunrise Springs from Spyro 3 over whatever bland setting is in Evolve, Ryse: Son of Rome, or anything AAA publishers believe WILL sell.
