Are you ****ting me? American Sniper nominated for Best Picture? The Boxtrolls for Best Animated Feature (while Lego Movie gets snubbed)? Transformers 4 doesn't get a Best Visual Effects nomination?
They've made quite a bit of mistakes this time around. Don't get me wrong, it's all moot since we all know Boyhood is walking away with everything it got nominated for. But they didn't have to mess up this badly. At least Steve Carrell finally got a nomination, Everything is Awesome has a nomination, and HTTYD 2 is being considered (though watch Big Hero 6 win anyway). Also can someone explain the hashtag? Is it implying that the Oscars are a never-ending trend of white people (despite the existence of last year)? |

Apparently the hashtag got popular due to the fact that EVERY SINGLE PERSON that got nominated- writers, actors, editors, etc- is white. not a single nominee is any other race or ethnicity. At least from what i've gathered. Where the hell is Nightcrawler and The Babadook? They should've gotten nominations or at least honorable mentions, ESPECIALLY Jake Gyllenhaal's performance in Nightcrawler. This is just like when Saving Mr. Banks and Fruitvale Station got robbed of any nominations. And really? Godzilla isn't nominated for best visual effects? I guess Transformers can be arguable, but freaking Godzilla? Don't get me wrong, it's likely that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is going to win, but Godzilla doesn't even get a nomination? And American Sniper being nominated for best picture is ridiculous. It hasn't gotten anywhere near oscar-worthy praise. I guarentee they're doing this just because Clint Eastwood directed it and Bradley Cooper is in it. I'm glad HtTYD2 is nominated(since that was my favorite film of the year), but watch them give it to Big Hero 6. The Lego Movie should've been nominated over the crap Boxtrolls movie and the award needs to go to the Tale of Princess Kayuga. Studio Ghibli needs at least SOME recognition from the Academy other than Spirited Away, especially since Miyazaki got robbed numerous times for his efforts. They'll just give it to Disney just by the fact that it has the Disney label on it. Of course Meryll Streep is nominated again. She could do nothing but sit on the toilet for two hours and the academy would still nominate her. The only thing i'm satisfied about with the nominations is the amount of attention Whiplash has gotten. I knew for a fact that J.K. Simmons would get a nomination, but i never expected it to get nominated for best picture. otherwise, the nominees don't really bother me, save for what i just ranted about. and does anyone else think it's odd that there are only 8 nominees for best picture instead of 10?

Honestly I think Transformers made more use of their effects than Godzilla did, and should be nominated more than it.
And Big Hero 6 will win since the Best Animated Feature award tends to be the one time the Academy tries to fit in with the popular crowd and agree with them. In all my years of paying attention to the Oscars I have never seen a foreign or independent film win the award other than Spirited Away. It often goes to the more popular film that came out that year (or just goes to Pixar if they made anything besides Cars and Monsters University). I haven't seen Big Hero 6 so maybe I'm talking trash for nothing but I hope HTTYD 2 wins the award. It shocked everyone by being better than the original instead of just cashing in and getting lazy and needs to be awarded for its efforts. Also maybe it's just me but "Where No One Goes" should've been nominated for Best Original Song. The lyrics are iffy but the orchestration is too good to be ignored. |

I'm honestly hoping that HtTYD2 or Tale of Princess Kayuga wins that award. I can't speak for Princess Kayuga, but Dragons 2 was miles better than Big Hero 6, even for as good as Big Hero 6 was.
i wasn't a big fan of TF4's effects. they looked like a step down from its predecessors IMO. They looked almost cartoonish and a bit unfinished to me. I still won't be surprised of DotPotA wins best visual effects. or if it goes to Interstellar since the whole academy is pretty much based on popularity like you said.

I actually think the effects looked better than ever. The sleek and more brightly colored look was an improvement over the bulky "trying too hard to be realistic" look the previous films had. It should've earned a nomination at least. Though I won't at all complain about Planet of the Apes winning. The effects and motion capture used in it are fantastic. And actually it's not at all based on popularity with mainstream critics. If that were the case, The Avengers and Harry Potter would've earned Best Picture nominations all those years ago. The Academy is actually well known for being out of touch with the general audience and having a thing for obscure indie films that nobody ever even heard of until they got nominated. Fantasy, Sci-Fi, and Horror pretty much never get even nominated for big awards like that, much less actually win (only example I can think of is LotR). Just a few examples off the top of my head are Avatar, The Social Network, and Gravity. These films were huge hits with both critics and the general audience alike. But rather than give those films merit, the Academy chose to award Best Picture each time to the more independent historical film (The Hurt Locker, The King's Speech, and 12 Years a Slave respectively). This isn't to say the three films that won are bad. On the contrary they're great (ok maybe not The King's Speech). But in at least one of those cases, the better film got snubbed. Also the Academy really loves to circlejerk films about WWII or things "based on a true story". |

Godzilla (2014) and Transformers: Age of Extinction didn't even get nominated for Best Visual Effects? And The LEGO Movie didn't get nominated for Best Animated Feature? Are you kidding me?

Why is Guardians of the Galaxy only in the Hair and Makeup one? It AT LEAST deserves to be in Best Visual Effects. I wouldn't mind Big Hero 6 winning, but Lego Movie really should be in there. Also, seriously, where the **** is Nightcrawler? That movie was great, why the **** isn't it in here? |

I'm kinda surprised The Grand Budapest Hotel was nominated. It wasn't awful or anything, but it's very... quirky. So much so I didn't think people would actually take it seriously tbh. But it's been nominated, and this makes me happy.

I want Big Hero 6 to win, I adored it. I haven't yet seen HTTYD2, but I don't recall hearing any raving reviews when it was released unlike Big Hero 6...
Steve Carell being nominated for an Oscar? Okay, I'm way behind newly released movies since I only remember his awful comedies. |

HTTYD2 had loads of acclaim behind it. The reason you hear more about Big Hero 6 is because it seems to have become a trend for the internet to adore the newest Disney film for about half a year and then call it overrated. It happened with Tangled, it happened with Wreck It Ralph, it really happened with Frozen, and it's happening here. And Steve Carell is playing a serious character in Foxcatcher (which is based on a true story about a murder). His character is supposed to be paranoid and borderline crazy, and apparently he did it very well. |

Sure. Totally not because it's based off of a true story of an American hero who got brutally murdered......Definitely not because it's a tribute to a real man who did more with his life than every actor, producer, and director at the Academy Awards combined.... |

I'm just saying it's no secret the academy likes to nominate the same people over no matter WHO it is. look at Meryll Streep. This is her 20th oscar nomination. and she contributed just as much to Into the Woods as everyone else, let alone was as good as everyone else, yet she's the only one that gets a nomination? I haven't seen American Sniper, so i can't speak for its quality, but i haven't seen it get near the amount of praise that would make it best picture worthy. best adapted screenplay? absolutely, but far from a best picture nominee IMO.

Since when are movie awards based on whether the story is real or not? If a movie was based on a serial rapist but had excellent acting and production value, that's all that matters. It's not how good the original story is, it's how well it's told. That's where the talent is. If this sounds sarcastic or in anyway rude, I don't intend it. |

regardless of what story it was based off of, awards should be given based on the movie's merits, not whatever inspired it

Patch Adams was also based on a true story about an interesting man who did quite a bit of research and theories related to the medical field which could (or has) helped us improve in that field. The movie is still pretty lackluster. I can't say much about the film because I haven't seen it (I will eventually because I do think Clint is a good director). But I've heard less than stellar things about it and a film's quality doesn't immediately become better when it's based on a true story. |
