i'm thinking about buying a refurbished wii u. should i? I'm doing it mainly to play MK8, Smash, and some other games. I know 3rd party is pretty much dead, but i'm talking about 1st party games.

Yes.

Although I'd be careful of the word "refurbished".

I'd order it from Nintendo's official online store if I were you. Better deal.

If you only care about Nintendo's games, then it is worth every penny. just don't expect much from 3rd party developers.

Cool cool.

I would have said no back in 2012/early 2013, but now it has awesome games llike Wind Waker HD, MK8, Smash, Bayonetta, Super Mario 3D World, and more coming this year like Mario Maker and Splatoon. Definitely worth it.

Smash Bros and Bayonetta 2 were possibly two of the only games to come out last year that had a legitimate claim for being a "game of the year" contender (most other games seemed to run on an 8/10 level).

Before I would've said no. But after 2014 being a great year for the system and 2015 looking equally promising, I would suggest picking it up. But like everyone above said, buy it for Nintendo games and maybe some niche Japanese titles. The days of CoD and Assassin's Creed showing up on it are likely over.

Yes! I got mine back in June and I love it. smilie It has a great selection of first-party titles that definitely should be played, with even more to come this year. smilie

Just to warn you, the only setback to the system is the quality of the eshop games. They never really do quality checks for the games that people make, so it's filled to the brim with horrible shovelware and flappy bird clones. There are some first party + indie gems hidden there, so don't dismiss it completely.

This.

But this also shouldn't stop you from trying out some indie games on the system. There are some pretty neat ones on there. just look at Shovel Knight or Shantae and the Pirate's Curse.

"Flappy Bird clones" expand on this? I've never seen a clone on the eShop.

I would say yes, but if you do, get the 32GB and not the 8GB. I have 8GB and my storage has been used up with the five games I have.

Much agreed. And if you plan on downloading a lot of games, you can use an external USB hard drive with the Wii U as well. Make sure that it is either a self-powered drive that plugs into the wall, or a USB-powered drive; note that with a USB-powered drive however, it's best that you use a Y-splitter cable that uses two USB ports to plug it in, as one port may not be enough to power the drive.

Well, with that math, the 32gb will be used up with 20 games smilie

It should also be mentioned that only certain drives and brands can work with the Wii U, so not every drive is going to be compatible with it. I'm pretty sure Nintendo has on their website which brands are compatible.

And i could be wrong on this, but can't you also store game save data on SD cards on the Wii U? I haven't tried this out myself yet so i don't know.

SD cards are only used for the backwards-compatibility Wii Mode. You can store original Wii game data on them, but not Wii U game data.
