I haven't played Skylanders since 2012, and I really want to get back into it. Can someone tell me what I've basically missed?

Well, you missed swap force (not much to miss there in my opinion) and the most recent one (if you didn't know) is TT.

As far as storyline? Not much... nothing that you would need to carry you into the next games (I would assume) you could always check out the main summaries of the games on the toolbar up top, but skylanders seems to create a loose storyline that you don't really have to have any background in..

The only thing that could be of use is
the new light and dark elements in trap team, and the ability to trap and play as villians

Well you missed out on paying full price for Swop Force so if you consider buying the starter your wallet will be very happy . smilie

Skylanders can now jump. The games are more vibrant in colour. You should be able to pick up Swap Force very cheaply - I liked the game, and still remember how great I thought it looked on first playing
