Cores, Minis, and Legacy Figures

The other day, a friend was asking me advice on which figures she should buy for her kids for Trap Team. I told her that to open all the gates in the game, her kids were going to need 1 Trap Master of each element (i.e. the dark starter plus 6 additional figures), plus the 2 expansions and 2 light/dark packs.

I started to mention the new cores and minis, but then stopped. It hadn't really occurred to me before because we collect figures, but it is my understanding that the cores and minis don't open any gates or chests in the game that a Trap Master won't open (Right?). Additionally, because there are no more collection-type achievements, you really don't need any figures other than the Trap Masters (Right?).

So unless you are buying for novelty, there is very little benefit in Trap Team to buying anything more than 1 Trap Master and 1 trap crystal for each element and the 4 expansion sets (including very little benefit to collecting legacy figures). Is that right, or am I missing something?

You mean besides the elemental bonus' in damage if you collect the whole magic set of each element.

I'm not buying any cores for Trap Team for this reason.

Honnestly, you can easily drop the trap masters you don't like.
Behind the elementals doors there's just hats and weak content.

In fact, you can fully enjoy the game only with the (dark) starter pack and one trap of each element.
For me, the adventure packs, light/dark are totally skippable this year.

I'm a month late to this thread, but I think it's still a relevant discussion.

I don't see why opening gates and getting a 100% file is important. The gates don't contain anything interesting. There aren't any bosses or special things behind them. At best you get a very short puzzle. At worst you get little more than a room with a present. The items in the presents are almost never useful because you get better hats from just completing the game.

It seems like a mistake to pass up buying a core character that might be really fun to play as over the issue of elemental gates. Someday there will be a Skylanders 5 which doesn't need trap masters to open gates. When that happens, what good will it be to have passed up on an awesome core character?

That all being said, giving advice on which characters are the most fun is highly subjective. In general, I would say to just take your kids to the store and have them pick out the ones they think are the coolest, regardless of element or whether it can open the gates. The kids will have more fun if they are playing as a character that caught their eye.

Can I just recommend that everyone pick up Tread Head at least? All the stores by me have so many of him, and he's really a lot of fun to play as, on top of being incredibly powerful!

My advice is to not buy any cores or minis since they almost don't do anything except add up the collection, so unless you are a crazy collector, one Trap Master and one trap of each element should do fine.

I do find that the cores are on average, a bit more interesting characters to play.

I love the trap masters but it's really disappointing that they are only really exist to open elemental Gate. Which only have hats inside .

I spose trap masters do deal a little extra damage to villains but not enough to warrant their specifc use or purchase ..

I will agree on the minis. They're some of the more disappointing characters to me. However, what benefit is there, in terms of fun factor, to buy Head Rush over Fist Bump or something? Costs more and you'll never wear a single hat you find behind those Earth gates.

minis are pretty bad, they tried a new repose gimic but it really doesn't seem to have worked. All my targets barely sell any.

Older players probly understand their just small reposes , and I did hear a parent saying the other day they didn't want to buy the kid minis coz they were tiny and they'd lose them too easily.

I would've liked some minis of the new cores to try out other paths. that to me was a huge miss for them. But I guess they saved months of prototyping the toy by just re-releasing previous molds.

RIP GhostRoaster. He's reanimated as TakeYourLemons but occasionally is resurrected from the beyond when needed.

I got the Drobit mini because I assumed that it would be good to have the latest version of Drobot. However, due to its smaller size, it's actually the worst version of him. The wing lasers don't even seem like they do anything at all because his wings are so small. He's exactly the same as other Drobots except he can't hit anything.

Don't look at the functions, look at the characters themselves.

Just because Fist Bump, Tread Head, Déjà Vu or High Five don't open anything, doesn't mean they aren't worth the money, and can become some of your kid's favorite Skylanders.

The next game will most likely let every character open Elemental Gates, so they are technically useless now, but probably will become useful, in the future, and may give your kids hours of fun. smilie

Still, if someone wants to 100% the game, they would still need smilie and the MOM.

Personally, I would buy cores, as they are awesome!
