I played High Five myself and found him rather enjoyable.
His Poison Pellet attack can provide rapid fire damage, and his Buzz Dash can literally send enemies spinning all the while damaging them.
When upgrading further, you can create Poison Clouds that can linger and damage enemies that are caught in them. The Fly Slam can be High Five's strongest move, but in last basic upgrade, Buzzerker Overdrive, his Fly Slam costs HP if you're willing to sacrifice health to damage enemies in one blow.
The Pollen Prince path focuses on High Five's Poison Cloud attacks. Further upgrading him in that path will allow him to create more than three Poison Clouds, let his Poison Clouds to linger longer and you can actually Buzz Dash into them to extend their time on the battlefield. The last upgrade in that path moveset allows you to make bigger Poison Clouds.
The Speedy Slammer path focuses on High Five's Fly Slam and Buzz Dash attacks. Enemies will be sucked in when you are preparing your Fly Slam, and as you may recall, this also decreases your HP. However when obtaining the Slam Apples upgrade, you will be able to regain some HP from a few apples that are released from the Fly Slam cloud. The Buzz Buzz Buzz technique allows you to use Buzz Dash continuously.
The Soul Gem, Organic Slam Apples, releases apples whenever you peform your Fly Slams. If you have the Speedy Slammer path, the apples that are release give you more HP than before.
If you double press the jump button, High Five can fly but only for a short while. While in flight, you can also perform your Fly Slam and fire your Poison Pellets at your enemies. I liked how TFB hid High Five's flight feature as a double jump ability. That really surprised me when I first played as him.
Here is my gameplay video on High Five, I chose the Speedy Slammer path -
