like somebody on eBay didn't like the game (in America) and sold it to a UK resident? that would be against the law wouldn't it?

well
for one, a USA game would not work on a UK system, trust me i know this it happend to me aleast 4 times

If you have an NTSC system then you can buy it from the US.
