When it comes to video games being released, how do you view it all?

Idealism: Games you dream for, games you want to see being a thing or how you think a game should be.

A full, large-scale remake of Final Fantasy VII with realistic graphics, open worlds and menu-based ATB commands.

A brand new Spyro game with graphics, platforming, level designs and voice actors reprising previous roles yet feels new and revamped for modern times to accept and be seen once more as a rival to Mario.

"HALF-LIFE 3 IS CONFIRMED!" actually being a thing.

Cynicism: Feeling betrayed too many times, games you don't care about are being pushed towards your face.

Capcom making a game but it has on-disc DLC and the vanilla game itself is worthless when a new version demands purchase.

Obnoxious, egotistical PR boasting about anything that's anti-cosumer or saying words like "innovation", "emotional" and "cinematic" too many times.

Publishers refusing to make or localise games people like and pushing out sequels nobody wanted, causing people to lose faith in certain franchises ever being good again.

Publishers and developers lying about their products (Aliens: Colonial Marines) or turn a 180 with graphical downgrades after all the hype (Watch Dogs and Dark Souls II) as well as pre-order DLC.

Realism: A little bit on the cynical side but with a sense of reason and research on exactly what's really happening.

Looking at how Versus XIII's development was halted for XIII to be finished, finishing the story along with re-writes, shifting to different platforms, why it became XV, transition of directors, learning what to expect from the game (An open world, real time combat) and wishing to know more (Story, characters, summons, sidequests, music, dub, etc.) BEFORE thinking about the release date, something most ones immediately think about.

Looking at reviews, let's plays and different opinions of games, past, present and future before considering whether to buy it or not.

Spotting if what you're watching is in-game or pre-rendered.

I just think it's important to think about all this in this day and age. I'm not saying you can only be one. You be idealistic over one thing, cynical over another and maybe realistic when discussing things.

I could be getting all this wrong but I want to know if you can add something to these philosophies.

What is your philosophy? Are you an idealist, a cynic or a realist when it comes to games?

I'm a solid mix of Idealism and Realism. Might be cynical on occasion though.

Cynicism/Realism for me. I never purchase a game without either extensive research, or being introduced first-hand by a friend.

Idealism left me gradually, as my two favorite series, Final Fantasy and Metroid, disentegrated further into mediocrity with each new release. FF XII was a boring rip-off of Star Wars (FF XIII is uninspired garbage) and the last 2D Metroid was released more than a decade ago. I couldn't be interested in MOBAs, military FPS, or GTA if my life depended on it. Perhaps I'm just growing away from gaming altogether...

I'm probably a mix of Idealistic/Realistic.

I take a pretty idealistic stance on Nintendo games, and I'm usually never disappointed (particularly with any of the Mario series... I'm a huge Mario fan). I think the new Paper Mario was the only time I was really disappointed recently.

But I was also a Final Fantasy/Resident Evil fan and both of those franchises have been shoved into the dirt and don't even resemble what they once were.

I keep finding new games to enjoy, like lately it's Dragon Age: Origins. So video games are constantly leaving me pleasantly surprised rather than disappointed.

Depends on the franchise really. When I'm waiting for a new Halo title I'm always optimistic, because I've always liked them.
Then again, I don't think that Bethesda will ever be able to get it's act back together, so I can be cynical too.
