I voted Melee because the game is so god damn good, and so fun to play with my friends all these years. It's faster, the mechanics feel tighter, and you can even play competitively if you chose so. I really feel like Melee was a dream game too, because back then, I thought the roster was crazy awesome. I have some amazing memories with that game and me and my friends still play it whenever we hang out (which is all the time).
Brawl and 64 are tied. I was incredibly hyped for Brawl when it came out and I absolutely loved it. Although, it's not as fun as Melee IMO. Project M changes things though. Brawl is still a magical game but man, oh man I seriously love Melee. As for 64, I think I was five years old when it came out and me and my brothers were constantly playing it all the time. Still own our copy of it too!
What do you choose?

Agreed. Melee was easily my favorite. Everything felt a bit more fluid, and all of the characters handled perfectly.
It's the first Smash game I played with friends, also, so that adds a lot. I loved the N64 version, but comparing it to the newer titles is difficult, as they all have more content to them.

Voted for Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U. I really love what I've played of the 3DS version so far, in my opinion, and awesome roster, some amazing music tracks and fun game modes. Melee would probably be my favourite if it weren't for me not playing it in so long. ;^~^

I withhold my judgment until Smash U comes out. I consider Smash 3DS to be a side attraction, in spite of Sakurai's insistence otherwise. >.>

If I had to decide, then the 3DS version, or at least until the Wii U version comes out. It feels new and exciting along with improved features and characters that I enjoy(Just seeing Bowser Jr in Smash Bros makes me happy). Although I am a bit disappointed by Smash Run. It would have been Brawl before, except it was the only Smash game I ever played before 3DS.

Roster: 3DS=Wii U (because they are and will be the same) Mini Games: 3DS>Wii U Design: 3DS<Wii U My opinion of course but in my mind they are essentially the same game. Although of course the different minigames. And better design/graphics of U.

3DS and Wii U.
It has a fully functional online mode. It wins on that basis alone. Though even then, I still prefer playing the game to Brawl and Melee overall. Melee is fun for seriously competitive play but other than that, the game has aged poorly, in light of the newer Smash games. Subsequent games just have a way more diverse roster (Melee had too many clones and it's meta game is defined by fast rush down characters like Fox, Sheik, Jigglypuff, etc). And they have a lot more to do in single player. Brawl is an opposite situation, it had a diverse roster and it had the content, but the base mechanics for competitive play are not nearly as engaging, IMO. And the online was broken. However, I still had a lot of fun with it, and I still love Subspace Emissary. Smash 3DS has an EXTREMELY diverse roster, nearly everyone feels competitively viable, with a lot of characters being touted as high tier, it has customisation, Smash Run is loads of fun (though it does have some issues), and the base mechanics are not casual play enforcing like Brawl, but aren't as reliant on raw reflexes and learning janky advanced techniques, like Melee. Oh, and I can play it on the bus. With the exception of Smash Run, Smash Wii U will have everything Smash 3DS has, only with a better controller, in beautiful HD, and will likely have it's own exclusive modes. Also, the stage list seems better for competitive play, but also has a few crazy ones in there. 64 is fine and is probably the safest game, and the mechanics are great for competitive play, it's just such a basic version of the game at this point in time.

Melee hasn't aged poorly at all. It's lacking the extra modes that Brawl introduced, but the core game is still intact and at its best.

For competitive play it's fine, as I said, but for everything else, later games outshine it. Also TECHNICALLY, Melee's high level play is based around exploits that were not intentionally put in the game, some of which being full on glitches, so that is a sign of poor age in it's own right.
