I was looking over the poster and a thought came to mind.
If we are to take that the 3DS version of that game will be its own different story (or we would hope that) then that meant the plot wont be to catch the Doom Raiders, so then what would be left?
Well there is no magic boss villain (so far), so my guess would be that in the 3DS version there will be 2 captureable boss villains, the leader being a magic element, and to make up for the lack of the other big bosses I think that the 6 smaller enemy question marks will be for 6 all new weaker villains.
If all of the other weak villains are obtainable, and they give you 6 3DS exclusive weaker villains and 2 3DS exclusive big bosses then it might just make up for the lack of the others. (Plus of course a unique new story is a given)
Obviously the question marks in the elements and the ones in the top right don't need to be discussed as it is incredibly obvious what those are.
So what do you guys think?

The 3DS portal doesn't have a trap slot, so I'm pretty sure you won't capture villains at all in it. Probably because it's meant to be played on the go, so they don't want you to have to drag around the portal and (at least) eight traps.
Also, the achievement icons for the console versions features some villains that we don't see yet on the poster, so they have to be hidden by the question marks. Which means that they pretty much have to be in the console versions ALSO, they would have said so already if the 3DS game had exclusive villains that you couldn't get in the console versions. And.. uh... I guess I've missed something, but I didn't know it was incredibly obvious what the question mark characters on the Skylanders side of the poster were. |

It would be nice if at least one of the remaining four Skylanders pertained to the 3DS pack.

Darn, I totally forgot about the villains that had been seen but that were not on there. Ah well, I guess I just really want there to be some kind of reason to make the 3DS version... well worth it. I still hope there is at least a unique story mode, villains or not.

Doesn't sound like it,since they usually have a trailer or at least mention who's the new villain(we knew about Hektore, the giant pirate guy and Count Moneybone before most gameplay, I think). Wouldn't be surprised if this time they managed to make a full port so the story is the same, but without the trap slot, I wonder how.
Also, the console versions wouldn't have the question mark guys in it if you'll only get them in the 3DS game. At most, it'd have different villains taking those places on handheld and console(excluding the APs,which I'm pretty sure are the ones with the 2 missing Doom Raiders).

You're Forgetting one very big thing here... Activision/whoever stated Multiple times in various inerveriws that the 3DS version will Allways have a different storyline than the main consoles. so that's not the issue at all. Besides that, honestly it's completely possible to still have a 'trapping' mechanic in the game... just you'd not be able to transfer said villains to the consoles. (as in it'd all just be virtural.) then you have the mini included in the starter pack which tbh I'm wondering if mini's will have some special/important role/gameplay mechanic in Trap Team. That's just my speculation... so you never know.

...They can change their minds, you know. Vicarious Visions /probably/ proved that they can do a good console game though one can disagree, so they might be working on Skylanders 6(TFB was said to be working on 5) instead of the 3DS version which is usually their job, unless N-Space got a permanent spot there. Or maybe the costs got too high that a port is cheaper. You never know, but an always isn't a forever, JCat. They said the same about Cores having an use in the game and look at Trap Team.

Did they really said that? I don't remember it. They said older characters would have been playable, in future games, even if they also hinted that this won't last forever.

I mean during the first games, when they'd say your skylanders had a special effect on the level or something along those lines. Pretty sure it was about how their powers could open elemental gates, and how cool that was and stuff. It did imply that even non-gimmick landers would still be able to use their elemental power on the gates... Which is kinda pointless if, just because it's made of a different ore, suddenly they're not powerful enough.

Oh, you were talking about that. Yes, indeed it it silly, pointless and unrespectful, to take away the unlock ability from older characters, but Lou said that "there will be other reasons, to play as older characters, besides the jump-attack". And, as GhostRoaster once rightly said: "(Zoo) Lou Studdert has never mispoken".

Crazy speculation: you can upgrade your old Skylanders into Trap Masters to unlock ? Gates, which is why they mention Trap Masters specifically but avoid revealing what's needed and the site still says there are only 16 Trap Masters.
... Nah, that's just ridiculous. But I don't mind that idea.

You know, when the first even images of Trap Team got leaked (the ones of the MegaBloks sets), I immediately thought that the gimmick for this year would have been the possibility to de-evolve some of the already exsisting characters, and turn them in super strong version of themselves.
Because Snap Shot remembered me a lot of Gill Grunt, Wallop of Trigger Happy and Krypt King of Chop Chop. It would have been a fun one, and it would have required to buy only new Core characters, maybe just 16, this time. But the trapping mechanic does seems a better idea.
