i was thinking about it.
the characters seem to be really goofy and silly. the gameplay style is the same as swap force, but with the villains. the cutscenes of annoyance will be back, and overall this game feels.... for little kids.
i'm still gonna buy it on day one, but only the REGULAR starter, 6 traps, krypt king, and gusto. then i'll spend the rest on infinity.
i just feel like... i'm outgrowing the franchise. after swapforce, the parents must have complained about the characters being to violent for their 4-10 year old kids.. pathetic. and these new guys (i'm looking at you, broccoli guy) are stupid.
but the world is blinded by skylanders. it's been around since 2011, and we've gotten so much merchandise it hurts.
that's my opinion. i can have and express one.

It is. They've stated it many times.
Though, it can be quite fun for older kids and adults. Plus, I just really enjoy the game it's fun. Plus, life would be quite boring if they stopped making Skylander games, or I stopped getting them.

People who hate Broccoli Guy hate fun.
And you were under the impression that these games WEREN'T meant for kids? You whole complaint about people complaining about the characters being too violent falls apart when you consider Enigma and The Golden Queen.

These games are directed towards kids, but childish? Swap Force was far more childish than whatever Trap Team has on previews.
Sure, this game is a lot less serious than the rest when it comes to the tone(Wanna know why can I break the fourth wall? Because I remembered I can actually do that.),but at this point this is a good thing as long as it doesn't get out of hand. It's childish when you talk down to the kids, but it's truly a series that's for everyone when it can talk to anyone without doing so. And Brocolli Guy is a parody of bad kid show villains (Kids don't like veggies, obviously they have to be the bad guys so they get interested in the show!). It's so you can laugh at how silly someone like him got arrested AND for doing something pretty bad(considering he's together with guys like Chompy Mage who tried to permanently change people's species), not that it's too low for your standards.

I'm 23 years old, and I absolutely love this franchise, and I'm proud to say it. My best friend is 26 and plays the games right alongside of me.
As far as I'm concerned, this game is for me.

Although I've heard Lou say over and over again it's a kid's game, I heard them saying this time around that they're trying to make it more family friendly, so everyone can get something great out of it. This is good news and bodes well for some of my future wish list. I think they're realizing they're going to have to play an important balancing act.

The kids are getting older and some will inevitably move on, like they do from TV shows. It's a tricky one - how do you both keep bringing in new customers to the franchise and simultaneously keep the households that are already involved still attached? If you mature it too far, you alienate the younger audience. Remain dumbed down, and the other end of the scale lose interest.
I think long term it'll pretty much remain where it is in terms of maturity and tone. It's far easier to capture new customers and aim to keep them in the franchise for a few years, rinse/repeat, than evolve it to satisfy what will most likely become a dwindling fan base.

It's a game for everyone. So it's easy to understand for people to just pick up and play while still presenting challenge to more hardcore gamers and adults (Like nightmare mode for instance).

I think they recognize that their target market has to get the buy in from the parents who make the money. That both works for and against the notion of being more mature. The adult parents who play it want more features, but cautious parents want to make sure it's not brainwashing Johnny and wants the maturity level appropriate. Using the Pixar movie analogy, There's lots of jokes only parents will get, but the movie is for kids. Applies here, except I'd argue adult players want more immersion.

So, a game made for kids can be enjoyed by teens
So Can My Little Pony-Talking about it, didn't I make such a comment before? In all seriousness. Sure this game is for kids, but that doesn't allow us teens/adults to play the game, right? This game is alot more serious then Swap Force(IMO) |

#18 Posted: 13:30:33 24/08/2014
The idea of having the game mature with the audience is a losing strategy IMO. It's still a game of toys, and the vast majority of kids are going to leave the franchise after elementary school purely out of peer pressure. My 13 year old refuses to touch the game. There will be exceptions of course, but you can't make much money by catering to the exceptions. So yes, they keep the maturity level low.
Also, I'm not following the logic of focusing more on DI over Skylanders because of the maturity level. How is DI more mature then Skylanders? I suppose the fact that DI has less...dialogue? The NPCs are less cartoonish I suppose, but it is still about collecting toys and kept at a low maturity level. |

No the audience is little johnny age 4-12. Parents get sucked into it which makes it a family affair. Older people play it, but the target audience is not them.

I'm twenty-three and, simply put, I'd rather play as a cutesy dragon than an overly serious human in dark clothing with no personality to them OR their design and they use generic big guns or some other over-the-top weapon.
I will say this, I can take quite a bit of whimsey, but Skylanders does take it a bit too far at times, especially with all the cheering animals. Those stupid Mabu are just way too sugary. |

Either giving up to peer pressure, the negativity that this board had for a good while until recently, or just plain getting bored of the series. Go follow closely another franchise, go back to this one a bit after Trap Team comes out. You might find out it wasn't lack of interest, just that following the news is more tiring than just picking up the game once it's out without having to watch tons of previews.

This. Not to mention that I can't stand shooting games or games with dull graphics and dark or complicated storylines. I play Skylanders and other bright and cartoony games to avoid those kind of games. I would only avoid a child friendly game if it was overly simple or meant for preschoolers. Skylanders is not too simple and not too complicated for me so I see nothing wrong in playing it. |

The kids who were 8yo when Spyro's Adventure came out aren't going to be the ones that keep this $2b franchise going for a few years. For that to happen, Activision needs to keep appealing to kids who are seeing Skylanders for the first time, and being wowed by it, probably those kids that are just starting to play video games. I don't expect massive change from the core game anytime soon. Perhaps providing additional content or spin-offs to keep early fans engaged and interested is the way to go.

Well, at the least it seems less childish than SF. Much less. (See post #5)
Personally: I feel the same in that I kinda want it but I kinda don't... I wanna try the new Skylanders and stuff out and I think I'll enjoy this more than SF, but I get the feeling after that's done I'll get really bored of the game, and it seems like it'll still have several noticeable problems I had with SF. And I want to try a lot of other games, but I don't want to buy those games and wait for Skylanders to go on sale, because the stock here is gadderful and half the figures would probably disappear before a sale starts. I don't want to miss anyone and be unable to get them on eBay (nor do I want to spend time keeping an eye out for anything I miss, I think that would just ruin it for me). Want TT because I know I'll enjoy it... Also want dozens of games which I hear good things about that look like fun... Honestly, the more I think about other games the less interested I am in TT (and I haven't been really hyped for it since announcement). After the Rainfish Riviera gameplay FGTV posted, my excitement for TT has only been creeping down.

Skylanders may be a game for kids but Disney infinity is more of a game for infants! I have the first one and, besides the great figures, it's a stupid and too easy game. I hope that the 2.0 version will be harder but I think it will be as easy as the first one, I'll probably buy it but only because i really like the figure.
Anyway Skylanders is a really great game IMO and i will keep playing it as long as it will be like it is. |

That's a question you need to answer yourself. I get peer pressured and bullied for my interests, including Skylanders but I didn't change. Except for the fact that I isolated myself from my entire school and made myself a loner in the timespan of a year but I'm getting ahead of myself. Disney Infinity is targeted to the same people but you and I still enjoy it. I see no difference between that and Skylanders. It all depends on you, but for me, it doesn't matter how "young" a game is marketed to be. There's a reason it's called E for Everyone and not from 6 to 14 years old. If it's getting boring and stale for you, that's another story. If it's just the target demographic and tone, it doesn't matter.
