Scarab Sage gives Dune Bug greater magic powers within his staff.

Dune Mage not only empowers his magic ball to trap more enemies, but it also gives him a fully golden appearance that increases his armor.

I personally would choose Dune Mage, but I don't like playing as him. So I don't have him.

Dune Mage overall is the best path for him. He is still the greatest core in Swap Force to me and all hail the mighty beetle mage.

I chose Dune Mage but skipped the armor upgrade. Personally I hate that pure gold look for him.

I prefer damage upgrades over armor/health upgrades, and it gives him a good crowd-controlling attack. I liked Dune Mage's Dune Grenade attack over the triple-shot upgrade (Scarab Sage), but that was the only one I preferred. I rarely use Drobot's afterburners, too.

Dune Mage.

My favorite SF core, he was a Scarab Sage for awhile until I learned a few details: the damage bonus is not only practically insignificant, it is slow to power up, and ultimately deals less damage in a much smaller area than Dune Bomb. Magic Scarab Ride is disruptive when attempting to jump while flying, and nowhere near as useful as damaging pursuing enemies with his Sparking Wings; holding Attack 1 and flying around in reverse to wipe out foes is a very unique and enjoyable maneuver.
