Well then, you thought wrong my friend. It appears that Sidekicks and Minis aren't as similar as we'd all hoped. Minis have the capability to store the kind of data all Skylanders do, Sidekicks were not created with this data so they won't be playable.
Here's an article explaining what I just said :http://www.thehdroom.com/gamin...rs-minis-79866/
That's too bad I suppose, looks like you're gonna have to buy every double pack no matter what....

I'm fine with this. What will be interesting is seeing others reactions. People were mad when they thought they had to double dip. Now that they know their sidekicks are unique to the versions released in this game, they're shouldn't be the backlash the minis have been getting, due to people owning the same figures. I think peeps who we're complaining will just complain more. Just my take.
Anyhow I like this approach. It makes my old sidekicks feel unique, while getting newer versions that can level up. I'm totally fine with this.

the article contradicts what has been said during the mini's announcement, not that they haven't been wrong/ changed things before.
i'll wait for in-game evidence either way. doesn't really effect me, i am going to get a red based set anyway, even if i'm not planning to. Quote:

He is proof that we will be able to play as old sidekicks .
In the new video that shows the "unknown element" they used Whisper Elf, when she was placed on the portal it said "series one" but when you look at the other Mini/Sidekicks it doesn't say anything. |

Even as people keep posting links as validation I seriously have my doubts. Its possible the footage shows them onscreen as whatever sidekick but as for wow pows, gold collection, leveling and such, I have my doubts. Once again, I hope i'm wrong.

I can personally confirm that sidekicks have the exact same RFID chip inside them as all other Skylanders. They can store the "kind of data that all skylanders do".
Now if Activision decides to give the red base Minis special powers (like Series 2 Wow Pows), that is another story. |

For the record, the article was based on information provided by a Skylanders publicist, thus I ran it given the source.
As for the validity of the information, as we know, publicists are human and humans make mistakes. Unless proven otherwise, the truth will come out by mid-September at the latest as I plan on placing a Sidekick on a Traptanium Portal myself several weeks prior to the game's release. I was planning this before seeing this thread. In regards to viruses at TheHDRoom as several have mentioned, those are a thing of the past. The site was painstakingly re-engineered and rebuilt from the ground-up earlier this year and is quite secure, modernized, mobile friendly, etc. etc. now. I'd love to hear what other questionable information we've published? There's been none that I'm aware of? If something was speculation, which I personally love to delve into from time to time as the resident Toys to Life fan, then it was labeled as such. If not, my apologies. Post on |

Well, even if they aren't playable (which I doubt they are), it wouldn't really affect me for a couple reasons. One, I don't have any; two, I never liked them anyway, so I won't be getting any; and three, they will most likely be useless (unless, of course if there are mini-only areas. Even then, I'll only be getting the Air Mini Pack)

Don't we need more video proof of the Sidekicks being played as Minis in Trap Team? As in showing the ones with green and orange bases being placed on the Traptanium Portal and then played out? It would make more sense.

buzz, doesn't myskylanders provide content for mysklanders.de? His word sounds good enough to me. Don't doubt you wanting to get the absolute truth, but there's pretty significant evidence pointing contrary. I think the guy who does videos for FGTV might be able to confirm it as well. I'm also pretty sure SkylandersBoyandGirl can confirm. And also Rob at CoinOpTV.

I'm in the process of trying to get the truth right now and likely have the same sources as those folks. What made this tricky is that the announcement came out for Gamescom so the only people with immediate access to ask were journalists at Gamescom in Germany last week.
I agree that evidence is pointing toward the contrary and sincerely hope that the Sidekicks play identically to their red base dopplegangers. |

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if they weren't playable. I wondered if they put the writeable chips in the Sidekicks, or cut costs by simply making them read only. They might be playable, but not able to be upgraded. I know people want to believe that their collection of Sidekicks will have new life, but I have more faith in Activision's cheapness than in their desire to add new value to figures we already own.

In the grand scheme of things I don't think it will matter. So far it looks like every new mini is packed with another mini that used to be a side kick. At this point it doesn't appear that mini's can be purchased individually. It's also safe to assume that we will be purchasing the new packs to get the new figure that happens to come with a previously released model. So the only two outcomes I see are:
1. We buy the new two packs set aside the new mini's and play with our old Side Kicks 2. We buy the new two pack use the new minis and the re-released mini that came with it. No matter how you slice it the results are the same, so why does it matter? I get the misinformation debate, that is an issue but I wouldn't scalp HD Room just yet. Most of them have reported misinformation at one point by either posting data that was incorrectly given to them from the source or not understanding the content and reporting it wrong (generalizing here so not naming names). I don't think it was ever intended on their part. |

I don't get why some believe sidekicks don't work. We even saw series 1 Whisper Elf used in that video where those guys found the unknown element gate. That means that they used the original Whisper Elf and now she can attack.

Useable and being able to save your upgrade progress are two different things. Even if the chip is read-only like the other magic items you could use the sidekick and level up like the other new minis but once the character is removed from the portal, it would reset next time you play the game (Unless they record your progress on the game file, which would lock the character progress to that game only).

As with myskylanders, I can confirm Sidekicks work fine. I have tested both my Gill Runt and Terrabite on the demo. Whether they can be upgraded or not, I have no idea. The menus for all that kind of thing don't exist in the demo.

It's true. I don't think people realize how easily RFID works. It's so simple to both read and write any kind chip that works with RFID. There's even a chip in the back of my dog's neck that gets both read and written on each time he's taken to the vet, and that one is only a little bigger than the size of a grain of rice. Surely the one in a Sidekick can manage all that.

Agreed regarding the nature of RFID chips. It would be silly for Activision/TFB to purchase 2 different kinds of chips, and it definitely seems much more likely that they haven't written to the chip before. In fact couldn't you previously take ownership of a mini/sidekick? That would be proof that they are writable right there, in addition to the statements of users above.
I would guess that the publicist misunderstood the question. Surely, they are asked if the minis will now be playable in previous skylander games, and of course, they are not. I can also understand running on a store based off of what you hear from the publicist. However, when their are several youtube videos that are specifically contrary to the primary statement of your entire article, it seems prudent to maybe double check the data. Then again, I'm not a journalist. |
