I have a present for you, Zac.

You're thirteen now, and you've taken your first steps on your path to life as an adult. Those days are still far ahead of you, but what you choose to do in these few, short years will inadvertedly change the rest of your life. It might not seem so, but when you are older you will look back to these days and see things more clearly, maybe wishing that you had done things differently.

Life is a learning process, one that lasts until the very end. Keep an open mind and examine what you see according to your own values. Don't live life as an obstacle course presented to you by your parents, by your teacher or by your friends. Choose your own path, and don't stray from it.

Think of a man, Zac.

This man is you, as you exist in the future.

What is he like? What does he know? What has he been through? Who do you want that man to be?

Now, think of yourself at this very moment, who you are.

This change from the present to the future will happen inevidably. Will you become the man you want to be, or will you celebrate your birthday ten years from now, wishing that you could change the past?
It's up to you.

Don't live your youth clouded by your own petty hatreds. Ten years from now your annoying classmates will be a distant memory. By that time, if you can't forgive them for what they've said and done, the memories of the past will never fully leave you at ease. Rid yourself of them by letting them go. Only the unloved hate.

Don't shun away from pain or hardship. A knight in shining armor is a one that has not had his metal tested. If you let your fears stop you from making desicions, you will never test yourself, and you will be stuck in the vicious circle of undecisiveness.

Accept yourself. All the pieces. If you can't love yourself, who will?

And always remember, life is not a roller coaster with rails leading you through the trying times and easy slopes alike. Life is like a great climb. There is no shame in not reaching the mountaintop, but in not even trying, you're always left to wonder if you could've seen it for yourself. And that, I think, is the greatest tragedy of all.
