Just pic a character you really like, and go for it! It doesn't even have to be from anime or manga, you could also choose someone from a video game or book or movie or go as your favorite super hero/villain. The sky's the limit, really.

I know, and I actually have a costume making project at the moment. It's just that anime-themed cosplays make up the vast majority of the "cosplay culture", and those are the very ones I would like to see less of.
