"The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,
But in ourselves, that we are underlings."
-The Tragedy of Julius Caesar (I.ii.140-1)

The above quote, being one of the most frequently alluded to of Shakespeare's, has etched itself in countless minds of authors and readers alike for ages. The meaning is plain: tragedy occurs in life, not because of fate, but because of the fact that we are humans and as such, we make mistakes. Sadly, this is the truth. But it is not a condemnation upon humanity; rather it is a realization and acceptance of said tragedy. However, is tragedy the only thing we can accredit ourselves for?

No. If the fault lies with ourselves, then so does victory. Think of every celebratory occasion that has occurred in your lifetime: was it simply a miracle, or could it have been accredited to someone's efforts? The first smile of a child as he leaves the womb, the signing of a treaty that ends a terrible war, the precious moment of bliss when new friendships form, and the feelings of unity when a community comes together are all examples of happy events that result from human efforts.

It is possible to love another being to the point of self-sacrifice. It is possible to let go of all negative emotions in support of the common good. It is possible to commit oneself to one's goals relentlessly, regardless of any negative opposition. It is possible to combine all these efforts into overcoming nearly all tragedies that we may face. Why do we have this power? Because we are human. We have those abilities and aspects, and therefore it is up to us how we view and alter our lives based on what we possess.

In short, the fact that we are human should be used as an incentive for greatness, rather than a rationalization for failure. It is true that failure will come, as it is a part of life, but the same applies to greatness. We are mortals, and therefore our time here is limited. Let's make it count.

Exactly. We are all capable of individual greatness. One's generation does not determine one's value.

Come on darkSpyro. You need to read this.
