How do you feel that when horror turn to jump scares?
I was just watching a video yersterday and it was on a horror game and what a surprise, it relied on jump scare for most of it's scary stuff.

So yeah, how do you like them jump scares and would you like to see some horror stuff that does not rely on that?
I'll share my thoughts later on.

Edit: Also I think I spelled the topic wrong, but I'm going to leave it like that because now I'm thinking of a dog.

I like jump scares for games, like those horror RPG games, those are a lot of fun :3
But like those jump scare videos where someone pops up and screams in your face, like that one with Linda Blair... HELL. NO.

I really wanted to contribute to this and I forgot. Blah!
Anyways, I do believe that jump scares can be fun for some *Cough*NotForMe*Cough*. I mean, I love seeing people play horror games and see....well, hear their reactions. But I think there should be more done with it. Like instead of "Boo! K, Imma leave now and come back in 10-15 minutes. Make sure to not expect me.", they could make the person feel uncomfortable and insecure. Like wow, I can't put my thoughts into words. There are stuff like this, but not many. Or not lately, at least.

Maybe some know stuff like this and could tell me about some work like it?
My idea is kinda have this thing appear when you least expect it. Is not screaming, is not doing anything. It doesn't really hold desire to do anything to you. The thing is just looking at you and you don't know why. It will follow you. It will disappear when it wishes and comes back. Maybe leaving some message. The setting is of course, what is the common for scary or creepy or whatever.

Just some ideas. :d
I know something like this must exist.

I'm not a fan of horror but when I look at some of the current horror stuff, I think that there's a better more original like way to make this "spooky"
*Cough* ****, my mind is an absolute cluster****.

My teacher showed us that video. A lot of the students screamed in the class while she laughed. I was all the way in the back so I didn't do much. I just thought "I don't get this lesso-OH, what is that?"
We were laughing afterwards so no harm done.

I hate jump scares, of course I don't like being scared, But Jump Scares and Screamers e.e just tons of hate for those things. The only thing/character that seems to work the scary charms in which I don't mind is Sanctum without his armor. THAT'S RIGHT KITTENS! YOU DAMN STRAIGHT HEARD ME! I FEAR A HEDGEY! AIN'T NO ORDINARY HEDGEY! BUT A MUDDA FRICKIN' FERAL PSYCHO ONE!

Only Derpy knows who that be. So you all just play the guessing game if you want.

Jump Scares are no way to make a game scary. It doesn't invoke the emotion of "fear" into whoever is playing, it just activates adrenaline and causes people to witness that surge of rapid thought for one second. Then it just fades away quickly, and you will eventually adapt to it.

Things that are scary are things that linger in the back of your mind like a rotting tumor, making your curiousity stab itself and your imagination wane to its dark side. Fear is what makes us fall in love with a stretched jaw monster with 12 inch needle claws while we sit sweating nervously as two human eyes look at us through a screen. We love the pain of fear, but we hate when it is being used by others.

That's my take on fear basically

I actually have to ask people who've played said horror game if there's jumpscares or not in order to decide if I'm certain I want to play the game. I'm a wimp and get nervous easily when it comes to this genre, and jumpscares have shocked me at points to where I had to turn off the game.

Alright, here's what I think. Feel free to disagree with me, it's not meant to be an absolute truth.

I absolutely hate jump scares, they are such cheap tricks used to startle the player.
Seriously, this must be one of the lamest tricks used to make a game "scary", along with tank-controls, no-weapons/ammunition, and sudden reduction/loss of controls. Nothing scary about it, it's just frustrating.

They're always scripted, so there's that. It's all just suspense, running around waiting for the next loud noise to pop up somewhere. The replayability get's completely butchered as well.

One of the best horror games I've ever played literally had zero jump scares. There was a grand total of one scripted situation where a monster spawned a couple of rooms behind the player, and there was also not a single quick time event in the whole game. The whole "horror" element is constructed purely by the atmosphere.
The game I'm talking about is a free-roam survival horror FPS. Anybody want to guess?

I can get surprised by jump scares, this is true...But it doesn't really play on fears, I guess it's not too bad if it builds up to that moment, playing on ones fears...But it's not the best way to to scare someone.

I like games that use more psychological fear than than jump scares, especially since those actually play on ones fears, such as Silent Hill, thinking something is there when it actually isn't and making one think something will happen to the player, such as otherworldly ghost coming through someones apartment wall, thinking it might come out of the wall.

One can play on anothers fear without the need of such tricks, on Silent Hill Downpour, there was this side quest where one had to go into this basement with only one dark long hall, and there were sounds of the enemies and the radio static and just the dark enviroment made you think you might run into an enemy in that small hall, somewhere in that darkness.

There are many ways to do psychological scares without jumping people, such as honestly I'm afraid of deep dark abysses, I always think something big is down there, and it makes me not want to continue, such as Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess having to go down into a huge lake, or Gravity Rush, falling into a dark abyss-like area. Yeah, these games might not do that except in boss areas and I know they are not horror oriented games, but I can't help that feeling of dread that something big might still be down there, especially since these games have different and sometimes big monsters/creatures.

Jump scares aren't too bad when building up to it I guess, but they get bad when overused in your content, there are so many ways to play on ones fears through psychological means, one does not need to rely on jump scares especially when they just surprise you, not actually being scary, just there to make you jump...Unless buidling up to that moment, though not saying the building up jump scares will always be good.
