I see this as good news to skylanders fans for two reasons. First, competition is going to push Activision and friends to get out of their comfort zones and take more risks. Second, it's going to help migrate folks off of the Wii onto the wii u. It feels like wii is holding skylanders back some. It will certainly cut into Activision profits, not likely to kill the franchise though.

To me, DI and Nintendo have popular characters going for them, but it also limits how creative they can get and still be remotely sensible.

Im not sure how happy I would be to hqve to buy figurines for multiple games. Mario cart, I need the figs, mario strykers, I need the figs, smash bros, i need the figs...

Kinda not digging this move for nintendo. Early days tho...

Sounds like something I'd start shaking in my boots for if I was in competition. If this succeeds, I bet this could end Skylanders AND Disney Infinity.

...But I hope it's not just going to be Mario. I hope Kirby and Donkey Kong get something out of this.

meh...the Wii isn't holding the Wii U back. Poor planning by Nintendo coupled with poor support by 3rd parties are holding the Wii U back.

No, the same figures for multiple games. I think that's kind of cool.

Bunch of older gamers speaking I guess. Nintendos pull with all the old stand-bys is weakening. I wouldn't be shaking in my shoes at all if I was Activision, and rather setting out to prove that they can do the toy wars the best.

Glad heroic challenges are gone. Imagine doing 165 per skylander. That's 27225 challenges. No thank you.

It's about time Nintendo did this, but it's too late now. I think the ship has sailed and while this will make them some money, it won't do the kind of business that Skylanders and Infinity are doing.

As I mentioned in another thread: Mario merchandise is overstocked at virtually every single store I go to. They don't sell well.

From what I have read it is NOT competition for Skylanders.

The figures for Nintendo work in their first party titles as save game holders or something. There is no announcement of a single Game to play them in, more talk of moving between different first party titles with the figures.

Pretty much this. Now if they did this with Pokemon (not that stupid Rumble game), that would be a different matter. Imagine a Pokemon game like Skylanders. How awesome would it be to play as your favorite Pokemon in an actual adventure game? For the life of me I can't see why they haven't done this all these years. They keep insisting that Pokemon needs to remain pure on hand-helds blah blah blah. If they want to save the Wii U this needs to happen. To my knowledge Pokemon is their number one franchise.

Now the way this looks to me, at this point, is that it will fail. I'm still a Skylander for life at this point. Given that all my SSA Skylanders still work in games that haven't even been released, they have my money.

They did do a skylanders pokemon a long long long time ago. It was a hand held game by itself. Not like game boy but like game n watch hand helds, but with Pokemon figure, a gym battle, and it flunked.

Rumble was released at a bad time, and not enough fan-power to support it, but this is gonna be a game changer.

One figure will work for multiple games. For example if you buy the Mario Figure it will work on Game A and Game B, you won't have to buy a Mario figure for each game.

More competition? Geez, I promised myself I would only stick to Skylanders....

...but I would love the possibility of having Kirby figures. If there are Kirby characters, then I AM SO IN. Just for the Kirby characters though......just for them...

Toys to Life will suffer if all competitors do is deploy a reader and a toy figure. In that regard, at least Activision is trying to push it forward with additional innovation, but I fear over saturation might water it all down. We'll see. Everyone wants "fast money".

If they do, it will be reduced to a fad quickly and die out. There's not infinity amount of dollars we're chasing.

Finally, I can have a Waluigi figure.

I'll sell all my Skylanders merchandise for a Waluigi figure. I will do it.

Nintendo are doing this as a kind of portable game save for all their first party titles from what I read.

There will not be a "game" to use them in, they will add on to all Nintendo games. I can see this happening more and more with people that have a big IP catalogue such as Disney and Nintendo. Sega next? Sonic figures?

Skylanders is really a GAME first with figures second. Everybody so far has tried to fit figures into their games (badly). This is the time Activision need to be super careful about improving the game behind Skylanders.

If SK5 isn't a major league upgrade on Trap Team game play then Skylanders is dead. Trap Team, "another" version of the same game again will put a lot of parents off buying it in the future.

WiiU has an NFC pad in the controller smilie

I expect they also want to use these to drive adoption of the Wii U by not releasing a "portal" or reader for the Wii.

They certainly won't work on the Skylanders portal.
