Trap Keys Explanation?

so far ive heard that each key can trap up to 4 different enemies so this will add up familygamertv got proof

so when an enemy is defeated- you can "trap" up to 4 of them in a crystal, and i'm guessing there's a menu where you can choose who you play as villain wise.
