Do any of you think it's a good idea to reward kids for just showing up? Like how at every science fair nowadays, they give out ribbons to everyone? What are your thoughts?
Personally, I think it teaches kids that if you show up, you get rewarded. Like if they show up to a job on time for a month then they might think they deserve a promotion. We might be raising children that don't know how to lose.
The reason why I ask is because the award ceremony(if you can even call it that anymore) for my little sister's baseball game was today. A kid, who barely showed up to practice, let a long the games got a trophy and I scoffed. The mother of said child shot me a death glare.
Oh yeah, no flame wars please! Just thought I'd make that clear.
(does this go in idle chatter... or..?)

I hate how everyone gets awards now. I mean, I understand that it's to make the kids feel better about themselves, but it teaches them that doing nothing leads to rewards. Teach children as you would train a dog. Don't give them treats if they don't deserve it.

For certain things it's alright, others not so much. Like the science fairs, for example. A person should only be rewarded if they actually did a good job on something. If they get a nice pretty ribbon for some piece of crap, that's just teaching them that it's okay to half-ass things because it will work out in their favor anyway. Sometimes you need to have your feelings hurt, otherwise you'll never learn.
As for sports, I feel like all members of a team should be rewarded. You are a team. A unit. Even if you only make it to one practice or whatever, you are still a part of that team. You may not know why a certain player barely made it to any practices or games, but things come up sometimes. **** happens. Maybe they have an injury. Maybe they can't get a ride. Or maybe they're just lazy, I dunno. I do feel like the coach should probably have them kicked off or something if it happens too often, but they are still a member of the team nonetheless. And especially if it's younger kids. It would just seem completely sad to give all of the other kids medals or whatever and leave one kid out completely. And I know that's kind of contradicting what I said in the previous paragraph, but sports and science fairs are a bit different. And these are just my opinions, so... |

If you're a young person yourself, please read this post.
In my opinion, every single kid on earth should hear those all-important, character-building words: "You lost, kid. You're a loser. You weren't good enough." It's not the abilities children lack, it's perspective. They need to learn what it means to fall short, and what it means to triumph. And the reason I want kids to experience something as horrible-sounding as this is because I believe in them. It won't break them. Kids are smart, they just don't always think. If you start doing anything with passion as a child and keep it up, you'll be a master as an adult. Kids have the time on their side. They're young, they still hold all their cards. They can decide to start whatever activity suits them early on, and then they grow up and they hit the world showing their full potential and skill, it's beautiful. A person who has developed grand abilities through years of hard work is to me, the thing I respect the most on this Earth. As I said, kids are smart, they just don't always think. Most kids don't realize the opportunity they have in youth to better their lives in adulthood. They just kinda pass on, unchallenged, not learning. Living with the false belief that their life will "truly start" only once they become adults. And when they're there. They'll see all the opportunities they had. All the things they could've done right. If you're still in your teens or younger, and you're reading this post, remember: All doors are open to you. Pick one, stick to it and work, work, work. Doesn't matter if it's science, arts, sports, ANYTHING goes. Put in the hours of practice and repeat, it's worth it. You will be revered for your skills later in life. |

No, I rather don't.
When I was a little kid and played Soccer, they gave out trophies just for being in the game. After the first game, I had to ask my mom what it was for, as I knew I sucked at playing and was sure we'd lost. When she explained it was basicly just for participation as a self-confidence thing, I still wasn't really happy, feeling I hadn't earned it.

No, I don't. Kids need to earn rewards by working for them, not just showing up.

I always felt the "participation ribbons" that I got in track and field were a giant F-U, U SUCK! Though I guess they are aren't they?

Well it's really dependent on such situations.
Like if it were a group project and one student of a group didn't do anything and just showed up. They shouldn't be. If it were a person that dislikes school and doesn't often attend every day, due to personal issues. Than yeah because it encourages them to go to school. Though I did get a science fair medal for participation, as well as everyone else (that didn't win) in the elementary school science fair. So there's no sad faces, and a message that says "At least you tried" in the story of it. But earning it is better. But encouragement rewards should have certain standards, like nothing too fancy like a certificate, trophy, and etc. Perhaps a cookie would do better.
