OK, so my friend has a PS1 and they have Spyro the dragon and this game called Croc: Legend of the Gobbos. I have to admit, their gameplay is awfully similar... and, OMG, the release date of Croc was Sep 1997, and Spyro's was 1998!!! Does... does that mean.... Our beloved Spyro.... HE'S BUT A RIP-OFF???? watch some croc gameplay on youtube, and you'll know what I mean. Croc's makers, however are bankrupt, so there won't be a Croc 3

croc is awsome! ^,^ I'm not suprised if they had ideas from croc but it's not a rip-off, coz spyro rulz!

Well Super Mario 64 was the revolution of 3D platforming games, saying that all 90's platforming games are rip off of Mario is like saying that Halo is rip off of Half Life. At the core all games which share the same genre are all the same. Also it was Insomniac Games first platforming game, so the technology was new to them since their first game was a FPS.

Infact they did say in this interview that they thought Spyro was the first 3D RPG game that involved interacting with your enemies with that kind of gameplay... So they might not have known of Croc... Maybe they'd planned Spyro and then Croc came out when they were making Spyro

Spyro is rather similar to games like Banjo & Kazoie...

I'm not saying Croc's better then Spyro- duh, no-one can match our purple dragon! But many elements seem to be taken from Croc. Either that, or Spyro was in production longer.

And, well in my opinion (sorry, BlackDragon) I'm not a metal gear fan, so I disagree- but if my bro was here, he would instantly prefer snake over spyro.

Croc:
Double Jump, beat up, CAN'T TALK, run

Exatcly. PS1 platformrs looked and seemed all knock-offs from eachover, but they weren't.
Also, Crash and Daxter look just like eachover!

ALL platformers that featured some kind of animal as the main character in the 90s was a knock off of Sonic.

Just because Spyro was made after Croc doesn't mean he's a rip-off.

I know something that's a bit of a rip-off of Spyro.

guns for JaK and Daxster
crash there "jacking" the mutants
becaUSE THE moast old platforms have been done so much so new idears are been put forward

Little things like double jump and glide don't make games different, nor the colour and personality of the character; the game designers can change that easily. Watch and learn, watch and learn (note the element of collecting items, such as gems, and the enemies)

Sorry I don't want to read all the posts on this thread but let's just say they are the same genre 3D platforming games they are all bound to have similar elements.

Croc was my first game. I love it but to say Spyro ripped it off, is something I would never think anyone would ever say. It's stupid i'm sorry. Yes there are similarities but these are bound to occur in games of the same genre and time period.

One game of this genre which IS a blatant knock-off is M&M's Shell Shocked. It's a Crash Bandicoot clone for sure, but that's why I enjoy it.

In the 2D platforming game I'm making, Cleaning Machine, you collect gems as well... considering you're playing as a robot.

Looks like a cute game, from what I've watched on youtube, but everyone else on this topic is pretty much right - Games of the same genera and era are BOUND to be similar.
